OFFICIAL: Xuan Son achieves a historic first for the Vietnam National Team

In a historic first for Vietnam's national team, a naturalized player serves on the leadership board.

Nguyen Xuan Son has been named vice-captain, marking his first time on the team's leadership panel.. This not only reflects his growing integration into the national team but also strengthens cohesion between experienced players, naturalized players, and Vietnamese-origin players.

This is a key element in fostering team unity towards the goal of defending the ASEAN Cup 2026. For the first time ever, the Vietnam National Team's leadership council features a naturalized player, and Xuan Son has had the honor of serving as vice-captain in less than two years since acquiring Vietnamese nationality.

Speaking about his debut on the squad's leadership panel, Nguyen Xuan Son was visibly moved. He stated: “I used to be captain of youth teams in Brazil. However, this is my first time being entrusted with a role on the Vietnam national team's leadership. To be honest, I am overjoyed.”

The 1997-born forward stated that he feels no pressure from his new role, rather viewing it as a source of pride and motivation to give even more. “I am already accustomed to pressure. Being part of the Vietnam National Team's leadership is a great honor for me. It's truly special. I will do everything I can to support the team,” Xuan Son remarked.

In the March 2026 FIFA Days camp ahead of the match against Malaysia in the final round of 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers, Nguyen Quang Hai and Nguyen Hoang Duc were vice-captains assisting captain Do Duy Manh. However, this time around, Do Duy Manh is recovering from an injury, prompting the coaching staff to appoint Nguyen Quang Hai as captain.

In addition to his national team contributions, Quang Hai enjoyed a successful 2025/26 season with Hanoi Police FC, winning the V.League title and being named the league's Most Valuable Player. Meanwhile, Nguyen Hoang Duc remains on the leadership council as vice-captain.
