Extra time ended goalless. In the subsequent penalty shootout, Egypt converted all four of their penalties while Australia scored only two, giving Egypt a 5-3 aggregate victory.

This marked Egypt's first-ever knockout stage win in their history. They will await the winner between defending champions Argentina and Cape Verde in the Round of 16 for a quarterfinal spot. With Australia's exit, all nine AFC teams participating in this World Cup have been eliminated.
