World Cup 2026: South African player Jayden Adams suddenly passes away at age 25

According to a Vietnam News Agency correspondent in Pretoria, the information was confirmed by South Africa's Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie. In a statement on social media platform X, Minister McKenzie expressed grief over the loss of one of the brightest young talents in the country's football, while sending deep condolences to the family, teammates, and fans of Jayden Adams.

South African police said authorities have launched an investigation after the body of a 25-year-old man was found at a house in the Schotschekloof area, a suburb of central Cape Town, on the morning of July 11 (local time). Minister McKenzie urged the media and public to respect the privacy of Jayden Adams's family and Mamelodi Sundowns, avoiding unfounded speculation until the official cause of death is released by authorities.

The sudden passing of Jayden Adams has left a deep sense of mourning in the global football community. FIFA President Gianni Infantino, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, and many major football organizations have jointly expressed their profound condolences.

Jayden Adams, born in 2001, was regarded as one of the most talented central midfielders of South Africa's new generation of players. He made his debut for the South African national team (Bafana Bafana) in 2022 and helped Bafana Bafana secure third place at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) under coach Hugo Broos. At the club level, after impressive seasons at Stellenbosch FC, Adams moved to join reigning national champions Mamelodi Sundowns in January 2025 and immediately played a key role in helping the club win the CAF Champions League.

At the 2026 World Cup, Jayden Adams was a key figure in South Africa's historic campaign. Before the tournament, Bafana Bafana had only participated in the world's biggest football event three times (1998, 2002, and 2010), but they were eliminated in the group stage each time. By playing in all three group stage matches with great courage, Adams and his teammates led Bafana Bafana to advance past the group stage for the first time in history, reaching the knockout round (round of 16), before losing to co-host Canada.

Notably, the greatest impression Jayden Adams left on fans was his resilient fighting spirit for the national colors. Just before the second match against the Czech Republic in Group A, the midfielder received the tragic news of his grandmother's passing. Suppressing the immense emotional pain, he still started the match and gave his all in the first half, contributing to a valuable 1-1 draw that kept his team's hopes alive. The touching story of the 25-year-old midfielder overcoming adversity became a symbol of bravery and dedication for the South African generation at this year's World Cup.
