Al Nassr is reportedly facing a serious financial crisis, forcing the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund (PIF) to tighten spending controls and pause new deals.
According to Saudi newspaper Al-Riyadiah, Al Nassr's total financial obligations have exceeded 800 million Riyals, equivalent to more than 187 million Euros. The information was confirmed by a source close to PIF as Cristiano Ronaldo's team comes under strict scrutiny by the Saudi Pro League organizers.
The source believes the crisis stems from inefficient financial decisions in the previous season. To prevent the debt from swelling further, PIF immediately implemented a series of strong measures, most notably limiting the financial management authority of Al Nassr's leadership.
When asked whether the current management is prevented from signing contracts for the new season, the source replied bluntly: “Yes, there will be no contract agreements until the management generates funds from the club's revenue.”
This means Al Nassr cannot recruit new players until it proves its ability to secure its budget through sponsorship, commercial activities, or other revenue sources. This is considered a freeze on transfers internally, rather than a registration ban imposed by FIFA or football associations.
PIF's restructuring plan is built on three pillars. First is to reduce the spending authority of the current leadership. Next, the fund has hired independent financial, business, and legal consulting firms to find solutions to increase commercial revenue, control costs, and build a roadmap to bring Al Nassr back to a sustainable financial state.
The final pillar concerns the ownership structure. PIF is reportedly considering two serious offers for Al Nassr, with the option of transferring a part of ownership being prioritized.
According to sources from Al-Riyadiah, the goal of this process is “to preserve financial value, brand value, and fan appeal; prevent the debt from doubling, and strengthen compliance with current governance regulations.”
PIF must also ensure fair financial support for clubs under the same ownership system, while limiting direct interference in professional matters to comply with FIFA and related football organizations' competition regulations.
If it does not generate additional revenue soon, Al Nassr may face major obstacles in its plans to strengthen the squad, directly affecting its ambitions to continue conquering the Saudi Pro League and the Asian stage.
