The Reds kicked off the Andoni Iraola tenure with a 4-2 win against Sunderland, yet a setback occurring within the first 10 minutes meant the new boss from Spain had to quickly address a pressing issue at the back line.
Liverpool secured their first win under new manager Andoni Iraola by defeating Sunderland 4-2 in a friendly held in Nashville. Goals came from Dominik Szoboszlai, Federico Chiesa, Kieran Morrison, and Lewis Koumas for the Merseyside club.
However, the positive result was quickly overshadowed by an injury to Joe Gomez. The 29-year-old center-back had to leave the field less than 10 minutes into the game after showing signs of a muscle problem.
After the match, Iraola did not hide his concern, describing it as the worst news on a day Liverpool won. The severity of the injury still requires further assessment. Nonetheless, any period of absence for the English defender could significantly impact Liverpool's preparations for the new season in a considerable way.
Gomez is the longest-serving player in the current squad and is one of the few versatile options capable of playing in multiple defensive positions. However, his career at Anfield has frequently been disrupted by physical issues.
This latest injury is even more worrying given that Liverpool's defensive options have already been noticeably thinned. Andy Robertson and Ibrahima Konate both left Anfield on free transfers, leaving significant gaps at both left-back and center-back.
Virgil van Dijk remains the leader of the defense, but the Dutch international has not yet returned to training after a season that extended through the World Cup. At over 30 years old, the prospect of a heavy match schedule also raises questions about the captain's ability to maintain his fitness throughout the season.
More importantly, Van Dijk's regular partner is still undetermined. Gomez is an experienced option, but his injury history makes it difficult for Iraola to fully rely on the Englishman.
New signing Jeremy Jacquet is also not ready to play. Iraola confirmed that the center-back is still recovering from a shoulder injury and will likely have to wait until the final match of the pre-season tour before he can feature.
Meanwhile, young talent Giovanni Leoni continues his recovery from a serious anterior cruciate ligament injury sustained early last season. The young Italian center-back is therefore not yet an immediate solution for Liverpool's coaching staff.
The series of difficulties has left Iraola with a tough puzzle to solve. Even if Van Dijk returns, Liverpool still lacks a stable partner alongside the Dutch captain, while the depth in defensive positions remains insufficient.
This incident could force Liverpool to accelerate their plans to add a center-back in the transfer market. Previously, Liverpool had been linked with Gonçalo Inácio of Sporting CP, while the possibility of bringing Jarell Quansah back to Anfield has also been mentioned. Although center-back was not a top priority, Gomez's injury may compel the Merseyside club to reassess their transfer strategy and speed up the acquisition of an experienced defender.
