ASEAN Cup 2026: Malaysia's head coach urges caution before facing Laos

Speaking at a press conference on July 27 in Kuala Lumpur, Coach Tan Cheng Hoe said that despite the team's comeback win 2-1 against Myanmar in Yangon on July 25, they should not be complacent against a young and determined Laos side. According to him, although Laos just lost 0-5 to strong Thailand in their opening match, Malaysia cannot underestimate them. He noted that Laos has a young squad, led by new coach Vladica Grujic, playing with enthusiasm and great motivation to avoid a second consecutive defeat.

Tan Cheng Hoe particularly warned his players not to lose possession carelessly in their own half, as Laos has dangerous counter-attacking abilities. Additionally, Malaysia must improve their ability to convert chances into goals.

The coach, who served as an assistant to K. Rajagobal during the 2010 AFF Cup championship run, believes that Malaysia's squad still has many areas to improve. His team has both experienced players and young faces who have not had much time playing together. In the match against Myanmar, Malaysia played inconsistently in the first half, falling behind after a goal by Myat Kaung Khant. However, captain Paulo Josue scored a brace in the second half, helping Malaysia complete a successful comeback.

According to this coach, fighting spirit alone is not enough in a football match. The players need to show alertness, smart decision-making, and control of the game. He noted that the experienced players helped accelerate the tempo, allowing Malaysia to effectively capitalize on attacking opportunities. In the match against Myanmar, Malaysia used five players making their national team debut: Rodney Clevin Akwensivie, Alif Ahmad, G. Pavithran, Wan Kuzain Wan Kamal, and Daryl Sham George.

Tan Cheng Hoe called for patience in the development of young players. According to him, the coaching staff needs to help them build confidence, understand their role in the team, and always be ready when given opportunities. These players also need regular international matches to gain experience for the future.

Meanwhile, striker Syafiq Ahmad said that Malaysia must maintain focus after their opening win. The 31-year-old player affirmed that the three points against Myanmar were important, but the team must continue pursuing the goal of advancing deep by focusing on each match, starting with the clash against Laos. Accordingly, every player must strive to give their best whenever given the chance.

The head-to-head history heavily favors Malaysia, with 15 wins, 2 draws, and only 1 loss in 18 previous meetings against Laos. Thailand currently leads Group B on goal difference after a 5-0 win over Laos in the first match.
