Rating Chelsea vs. Western Sydney Wanderers: Joao Pedro shines, Palmer and Estevao disappoint

Joao Pedro became Chelsea's hero with a hat-trick in just 10 minutes, while Cole Palmer and Estevao Willian left little impact in the 6-4 victory over Western Sydney Wanderers.

Chelsea played their first public friendly under coach Xabi Alonso in an emotional scenario. The London side scored six goals but also conceded four times.

Dastan Satpaev, Dario Essugo, and Jamie Gittens each found the net before Joao Pedro completed a quick hat-trick, helping Chelsea snatch a thrilling win over Western Sydney Wanderers. Below are the player ratings for Chelsea's squad in the Sydney victory.

Starting lineup

Teddy Sharman-Lowe – 5 points

The 23-year-old goalkeeper made a good save against Liam Gillion's shot early on. However, he could have done better on the second goal, even though the ball was placed into a tricky corner of the net.

Tayo Subuloye – 5 points

The Chelsea U18 captain had to play out of position at right-back. Subuloye struggled, couldn't prevent the move leading to the third goal, and had few chances to join in building attacks.

Josh Acheampong – 5 points

Acheampong didn't handle the first-half goal well. He was part of a defensive line that lacked cohesion and left too many gaps.

Tosin Adarabioyo – 5 points

Wearing the captain's armband, Tosin failed to bring solidity to the backline. The English center-back also missed two good headed chances in the opposition box.

Landon Emenalo – 6 points

With Jorrel Hato not yet ready after the World Cup and Marc Cucurella having left, Emenalo has been used frequently by Alonso in closed-door friendlies.

He handled the ball reasonably well but continued to have defensive issues. Emenalo also made a mistake in the move that led to Western Sydney Wanderers' third goal.

Dario Essugo – 7 points

The Portuguese U21 midfielder wasn't too prominent for most of the first half. However, Essugo combined well with Reggie Walsh before scoring the equalizer just before the break.

Reggie Walsh – 7 points

Playing as a number 10, Walsh frequently found good spaces. He had a long-range shot saved in the 17th minute before making a smart run and providing a well-weighted pass for Essugo to score.

Reggie Watson – 7 points

Watson was tidy on the ball but also had a few misplaced passes. The fact that a 16-year-old, the youngest in Chelsea's squad, was given a chance is notable. Watson also took a powerful free kick that went over the bar in the second half. He was the only Chelsea player to play the full match.

Dastan Satpaev – 7 points

The Kazakh striker became the first goal scorer of the Xabi Alonso era, even though he is not yet officially a Chelsea player. Satpaev will complete his transfer from FC Kairat when he turns 18 in August. In this match, he sprinted past German Ferreyra before slotting into the near post in the sixth minute.

Liam Delap – 6 points

Delap's future has been questioned after Chelsea approached Danny Welbeck. Nevertheless, the 23-year-old striker started in a lineup of mostly reserves and young talents.

Delap worked hard, helping create an early chance for Ryan Kavuma-McQueen, but then fired over the bar from a good position in the 27th minute.

Ryan Kavuma-McQueen – 6 points

Kavuma-McQueen had a dangerous curling shot early on but couldn't maintain his influence for the rest of the game. The young Chelsea player faded before being substituted.

Substitutes

Mahdi Nicoll-Jazuli – 7 points

Usually used in attacking roles, Nicoll-Jazuli was tasked with playing as the deepest midfielder this time. The 16-year-old handled his new role quite well, notably making a crucial tackle to prevent a goal.

Omari Kellyman – 6 points

The 20-year-old winger, who was on loan at Cardiff last season, had one shot on target after coming on.

Robert Sanchez – 6 points

Sanchez had few opportunities to impress after entering the game. The Spanish goalkeeper could do little about Awan Lual's second-half goal.

Wesley Fofana – 7 points

Fofana helped calm and solidify Chelsea's defense for a period. However, the French center-back still made one serious mistake.

Aaron Anselmino – 6 points

The Argentine center-back was deployed out of position at left-back. Anselmino did a decent job but left little impression.

Levi Colwill – 7 points

Colwill, along with Fofana, helped stabilize Chelsea's defense after coming on. Nevertheless, Alonso's side still conceded following a costly turnover by Estevao.

Jamie Gittens – 8 points

Gittens made an immediate positive impact after coming on. He had a dangerous shot before scoring the equalizer for Chelsea. The English winger has now scored three goals in three summer friendlies, including two in previous closed-door matches. Gittens is showing excellent fitness and form.

Estevao Willian – 5 points

Estevao had a forgettable performance. On his first touch, the Brazilian player attempted an inaccurate volley.

He then missed another shot and lost the ball in a dangerous area, leading to Chelsea's fourth conceded goal. The only bright spot was a technical dribble in midfield before accelerating and shooting in the 84th minute.

Cole Palmer – 6 points

Palmer still showed his ability to shield and hold the ball under pressure. However, the English star was not given much space in central areas.

He didn't have a clear influence on the attacking play and had a relatively quiet game compared to expectations.

Joao Pedro – 9 points

Joao Pedro was the standout player of the match. The Brazilian striker completed a hat-trick in just 10 minutes and sealed the win for Chelsea.

In about 30 minutes on the pitch, Joao Pedro was superior in strength, speed, and finishing. He consistently dominated the Western Sydney Wanderers defense and delivered a decisive performance.

Joao Pedro's hat-trick gave Chelsea's attack positive signs in their first game under Alonso. However, the unconvincing displays from Palmer and Estevao, along with four goals conceded, showed that the London side still have many issues to address.
