Vietnam national team could win the FIFA ASEAN Cup right on Indonesian soil.

Boasting Xuân Son, Hoàng Hên, Tài Lộc, Đình Bắc and an unbeaten run of 19 games, Vietnam may step into the 2026 FIFA ASEAN Cup with a historically powerful lineup.

The 2026 FIFA ASEAN Cup is opening up the prospect of a top-level clash between Vietnam and Indonesia. According to information published by ASEAN Football, Indonesia will host the Premier Division (top tier) in Jakarta from September 23 to October 3, while the Challenge Division is expected to be held in Hong Kong.

FIFA previously confirmed that the first tournament will take place during the international match window of September–October 2026, while also guaranteeing participation slots for member associations in Southeast Asia. The tournament regulations were also approved in June. FIFA President Gianni Infantino stated that the new competition is designed to create opportunities for "the best players of ASEAN to shine on the global stage."

This means that teams have a much better basis to call up their optimal squads compared to AFF Cup which usually takes place outside the FIFA calendar. Indonesia could bring in a host of players playing abroad such as Jay Idzes, Kevin Diks, Calvin Verdonk, Dean James, Ole Romeny, or other experienced naturalized players. When the problem of releasing players from clubs is no longer an issue, the true strength of the archipelago team can be fully demonstrated.

However, Vietnam also possesses a force strong enough to create a balanced contest. The naturalized trio Nguyễn Xuân Son, Đỗ Hoàng Hên, and Nguyễn Tài Lộc bring different qualities to the attack. Xuân Son is strong, versatile, and can serve as a focal point; Hoàng Hên stands out for his creativity and long-range shots; while Tài Lộc can play flexibly in many positions.

Alongside them is Nguyễn Đình Bắc - a striker entering a brilliant period of maturity. His hat-trick in the 7-0 win over Timor Leste shows that this young player is no longer just an option for the future. The midfield still features Hoàng Đức, Quang Hải, the defense has Văn Hậu, Thành Chung, and the goalkeeper position is strengthened by choices like Lê Giang Patrik and Đặng Văn Lâm. It is a combination of domestic talent, experience, youth, and quality additions.

That strength is also reflected by a streak of 19 unbeaten matches under coach Kim Sang-sik, consisting of 17 wins and two draws. This is the longest unbeaten run in the history of the Vietnam national team, surpassing the 18-match milestone set during the 2016–2018 period.

The historically strongest squad of the Vietnam national team can fully compete evenly with Indonesia's naturalized stars.

However, an Indonesia with all its top naturalized players is a sufficiently heavy yardstick to test the status of the current squad. If the two teams meet at the FIFA ASEAN Cup, it could be the most anticipated matchup in regional football in years.

And if Vietnam can overcome Indonesia and go on to win the championship right in the passionate atmosphere of Jakarta, that title will carry more meaning than just a trophy. It could become a moment affirming that the current generation truly is one of the strongest Vietnam national teams in history.
