Manchester United aims to sell the "new Luke Shaw" for £6 million to fund a Newcastle left-back, sparking fan outrage over repeating a past mistake.

Manchester United have officially announced five new signings this summer, but fans remain unsatisfied. They think at least another midfielder, a left-back, and a backup striker are required. With Rashford's return certain, the chance of bringing in a left winger is small.

Last week, United signed young talent Tynan Thompson for £8 million. The 18-year-old English prospect is on the cusp of senior football, and the Red Devils see value in acquiring players of this caliber. Their success template is Ayden Heaven.

Heaven joined from Arsenal in January 2025 for £1.5 million in a similar manner. The 19-year-old has already made 24 appearances for United, and the club hopes Thompson will follow a similar development path.

According to The Athletic, both deals were orchestrated by scout Sam Williams, who returned to United in June 2024 after Ipswich's last promotion to the Premier League, tasked with finding young talents. Thompson will first train with the U21 team and may get opportunities in the first team.

This young player, dubbed the "Tottenham Rashford," along with the returning Rashford himself, as well as Cunha and Patrick Dorgu who played left wing last season, means United's transfer focus is on left-backs.

If United decide to bring in a left-back, Newcastle United's Lewis Hall remains the priority. The 21-year-old former Chelsea academy player is willing to join the Red Devils. He had a conflict with Newcastle manager Eddie Howe over position issues at the end of last season, which led to his omission from England's World Cup squad.

However, Newcastle has generated sufficient income through player sales and no longer fears breaching financial rules, so whether they will agree to sell Hall is a big question mark. Even if they do sell, the Magpies will demand a high price, with £50 million as the minimum, and some rumors suggest £70 million.

Therefore, the Glazers may need to sell existing players to raise funds. United have many players who can play left-back: Luke Shaw, Harry Amass, Diego Leon, Dorgu, Diogo Dalot, and Noussair Mazraoui. Among them, 19-year-old Englishman Amass performed well in pre-season, with a goal and an assist against Rosenborg.

But The Athletic's Laurie Whitwell says United may take this opportunity to sell him, receiving a £6 million transfer fee plus add-ons, a buy-back clause, and a sell-on percentage. Several Championship clubs have contacted United, and negotiations are ongoing.

Amass was once hailed as the "new Luke Shaw." Last season, he was loaned to Sheffield Wednesday and Norwich in the Championship. The player showed good form in pre-season under Ten Hag, and fans are angry about the potential sale, seeing it as a repeat of the Álvaro Fernández Carreras saga. A-Fernández was sold for £6 million but later joined Real Madrid for £43 million!

However, the club believes Amass's height and physicality are weaknesses, making it hard for him to become a starter at a top club immediately. He needs more development to succeed.

United correspondent Andy Mitten said: "Hall is definitely a player United are interested in. I've been wondering if it's still difficult to poach players from Newcastle, given that many have left Newcastle this year. United only have Luke Shaw as a consistent left-back. He played almost all matches last season, but in a Champions League season, the team needs more cover. Mazraoui can play left-back, but United really need another player. So that's why United are looking for a left-back."
