OFFICIAL: FIFA announces its decision on the brand-new tournament featuring the Vietnam National Team

The world football governing body has formally announced Indonesia as the host for the top tier of the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026, where the Vietnam National Team will participate.

FIFA officially confirms that Indonesia will host the highest division of the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026, a new competition for Southeast Asian teams and select guest nations. According to plans released by Indonesia, the Premier Division will take place in Jakarta from September 23 to October 3, while Hong Kong will host the Challenge Division. This is a new regional tournament under the auspices of FIFA.

The FIFA ASEAN Cup is expected to bring together 14 to 16 teams, divided into two separate divisions. The Premier Division will consist of eight teams and be held in Indonesia, while the Challenge Division will feature six to eight teams in Hong Kong. Teams are likely to be seeded based on the FIFA Rankings to ensure more balanced matchups.

As one of the top teams in Southeast Asia, Vietnam is highly likely to take part in the Premier Division alongside Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, and other high-ranked guest teams. This will be an opportunity for coach Kim Sang Sik and his players to compete for a title under FIFA's banner, while also earning ranking points if the matches are recognized as international A-level fixtures.

The biggest difference from the ASEAN Championship is that the FIFA ASEAN Cup will be held during the international match calendar. As a result, clubs are required to release players according to regulations, making it easier for Vietnam to call up its strongest squad. Key players who are currently abroad or have previously missed tournaments due to club commitments will have a clearer path to return.

However, the schedule poses a significant challenge for Vietnamese football. The ASEAN Championship 2026 ends on August 26, while the FIFA ASEAN Cup begins less than a month later. At the same time, the U23 Vietnam team will also compete in the ASIAD 2026 in Japan, meaning some young players capable of representing both teams must be managed carefully to avoid overloading.

The arrival of the FIFA ASEAN Cup marks a new chapter for Southeast Asian football, as teams gain access to a high-quality competition with better squad assurance. For Vietnam, the tournament in Indonesia is not only a chance to test their strength against the region's top sides but also an opportunity to assert their status, improve their FIFA ranking, and aim for another title in 2026.
