BREAKING: The weakest team in Asia competes in a FIFA tournament, but will not face the Vietnam national team.

Surprisingly, Pakistan, which holds the 198th position in the FIFA rankings, has confirmed its entry into the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026.

The Pakistan Football Federation has confirmed that the national team will participate in the 2026 FIFA ASEAN Cup, a new tournament scheduled from September 21 to October 6. With its 198th place in the FIFA rankings, Pakistan will compete in Tier 2, also known as the Challenge Division. The appearance of this South Asian representative helps expand the tournament's scale, making it no longer limited to Southeast Asian teams.

According to the planned division scheme, the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 consists of two tiers based on the teams' level and rankings. Tier 1, or the Premier Division, is the championship group, featuring Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, and the Philippines. The remaining slots are reserved for international guests, while FIFA is considering options to replace China's position. The Premier group is expected to play in Indonesia.

Given its status as a top regional side, the Vietnam national team has been placed in the Premier Division and will directly compete against the strongest Southeast Asian opponents. Thailand, Indonesia, and Malaysia all have big ambitions, while Singapore and the Philippines possess many naturalized players. The addition of extra-regional guests promises to provide coach Kim Sang Sik's squad with higher-quality matches than typical regional tournaments.

Tier 2 – the Challenge Division is expected to include Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos, Brunei, Timor-Leste, and host Hong Kong (China). Pakistan will join this group as a guest team, raising the expected number of teams to seven. The Challenge Division will be held in Hong Kong, providing opportunities for lower-ranked teams to gain experience, seek victories, and improve their FIFA ranking points.

FIFA has approved the first edition of the FIFA ASEAN Cup to be held during September and October 2026, after the tournament was introduced at the 2025 ASEAN Summit. The new competition is modeled after the FIFA Arab Cup, aiming to increase international playing opportunities and promote the development of Southeast Asian football.

A key advantage for the Vietnam team is that the tournament is scheduled during FIFA's international match windows. Therefore, clubs must release players as per regulations, allowing coach Kim Sang Sik to call up the best squad. The FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 not only offers a chance to win another title, but also helps Vietnam accumulate points, improve their ranking, and test their strength against new opponents.
