Arbeloa draws attention with his rigorous training regimen at Fulham

Alvaro Arbeloa is rapidly imposing his philosophy at Fulham through intense training drills, requiring relentless pressing and forbidding any reduction in pace.

Fulham has just released a special video capturing a training session during their pre-season camp in Portugal. Alvaro Arbeloa was fitted with a microphone throughout the session, thereby helping fans better understand the demands of the Spanish manager.

During a fitness drill combined with tactics, Arbeloa repeatedly urged the players to maintain speed even as signs of fatigue emerged. When a player was nearing his limit, the former Real Madrid coach said: “We need to squeeze you until you're exhausted, sorry”. The remark was motivational in the training context, yet it still partly indicates the very high fitness standards he is establishing at Fulham.

In a tactical fitness exercise, Arbeloa constantly pushed his players to keep up the pace despite visible signs of tiredness.

Arbeloa does not just ask his players to run a lot. He frequently stops the drill to adjust the spacing of the formation, movement directions, and timing of pressure. Fulham players are required to immediately close down after losing the ball, block the nearest passing options, and maintain a tight enough distance to regain possession.

The aforementioned intensity aligns with the message Arbeloa sent to the entire squad in his early days. The 43-year-old manager declared: “I will give you the confidence to show your talent, but talent without effort means nothing. We will be a high-pressing team, playing fiercely, giving everything, and running to the very end.”

Even Alex Iwobi had to admit that the preparation period under Arbeloa was not easy. The Nigerian midfielder revealed that Fulham conducted double training sessions, and described the new workload with the message: “Pre-season, training twice a day, no joke.”

Arbeloa was appointed by Fulham on July 7 on a three-year contract, extending until the summer of 2029. In the official announcement, the Craven Cottage side emphasized that the Spanish strategist's philosophy is built on aggressive pressing, defensive organization, and proactive play.

Arbeloa was hired by Fulham on July 7 with a three-year deal running until the summer of 2029.

The first signs appeared somewhat in the friendly match that ended in a 1-1 draw with Al-Ahli. Arbeloa assessed that Fulham had better ball control, quick switches from one flank to the other, and strong pressure immediately after losing possession. However, he admitted that the team still needs more time to improve chance creation and refine the operating system.

Fulham was not yet at full strength, having lost 0-2 to Norwich earlier, and many internationals had just returned after the World Cup. However, the way Arbeloa ramped up the workload shows he has no intention of building the team along a safe path.

From double sessions to constant pressing demands, Fulham is being prepared for a more energetic appearance. The remaining question is whether the players can sustain that rigorous intensity when the Premier Leagueofficially kicks off.
