OFFICIAL: Vietnam National Team to Face Thailand at FIFA ASEAN Cup

According to FIFA's official announcement, the Vietnam national team will compete in Division 1 of the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026, placed in Group B alongside Thailand, the Philippines, and Pakistan.

The FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 will mark the first time a tournament for Southeast Asian teams is directly managed and operated by the World Football Federation. This tournament is completely separate from the traditional AFF Cup and is scheduled to take place during the FIFA Days window from September 24 to October 3, 2026. As a result, teams can call up their strongest squads, including players competing abroad. Match results will also count towards the FIFA World Rankings with coefficients applied to international matches during FIFA Days.

Beyond the change in organizing body, the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 will also expand in scale with the participation of teams outside the 11 Southeast Asian member associations. In addition to the familiar regional representatives, the tournament will include Pakistan and Hong Kong (China) as guest participants. The expansion of the roster is expected to increase competitiveness while providing Southeast Asian teams with more opportunities to play against opponents of different styles and levels.

According to the announced plan, the tournament will be organized in a two-tier format consisting of Division 1 and Division 2. Division 1 matches will take place in Indonesia, while Hong Kong (China) will host Division 2. In the top tier, eight teams are divided into two groups. Group A includes host Indonesia, India, Malaysia, and Singapore. The Vietnam national team is placed in Group B with Pakistan, Thailand, and the Philippines, forming a group considered highly competitive.

In Division 2, six teams are also split into two groups for competition. Group A consists of Hong Kong (China), Myanmar, and Brunei, while Group B includes Cambodia, Laos, and Timor-Leste. The division into two tiers allows teams of similar levels to face each other more regularly, thereby reducing matches with too large a gap in expertise. This model also creates motivation for teams to maintain their position in Division 1 or aim for promotion in subsequent seasons.

Vietnam National Team well-placed to win FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 as no opponent is too strong

For the Vietnam national team, the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 is seen as an important opportunity to test their strength in quality matchups. Thailand is the top direct regional rival, while the Philippines is improving thanks to its policy of using many players with overseas experience. Pakistan could also present new challenges in terms of physicality and playing style. In the other group, the clashes between Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, and India promise to draw significant attention from fans and regional media.

Besides the goal of competing for achievements, playing within the FIFA Days window also helps teams accumulate points in the FIFA World Rankings. Representatives in Division 2 also have the opportunity to enhance their international experience, gradually narrowing the gap and aiming for promotion. According to the organizers, the detailed match schedule and official regulations will be announced in due course. Member associations are currently carrying out registration procedures and finalizing preparations before the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 kicks off.
