What you need to know about the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026: Vietnam national team awaits a major showdown

The involvement of the Vietnam national team in the 2026 FIFA ASEAN Cup has garnered considerable interest, given that this is the first edition directly managed by FIFA. Everything from the FIFA Days calendar, the FIFA points calculation method, to the two-division structure is expected to redefine the landscape of Southeast Asian football.

What is special about the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026?

The FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 marks the first time that Southeast Asian football has a national team tournament directly managed and operated by the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA). Unlike the traditional ASEAN Championship (AFF Cup), this new competition will be held during the FIFA Days window from September 24 to October 3, 2026, allowing teams to call up their strongest squads, including players based abroad.

Beyond the change in organizing body, the FIFA ASEAN Cup also introduces several new features regarding scale and format. Notably, all match results will count toward the FIFA World Ranking based on the coefficient of FIFA Days matches, thereby increasing the tournament's professional value and competitiveness. This factor is also expected to create a distinct appeal for the event from its very first edition.

One of the most notable changes is that the tournament is no longer limited to the 11 ASEAN member associations. In addition to AFF teams, FIFA has invited Pakistan and Hong Kong (China) to participate, thereby expanding the scale and increasing international exposure. The inclusion of guest teams is expected to enhance the professional quality and create more exciting matchups.

Format and group draw for Vietnam

According to FIFA's announcement, the tournament is divided into two divisions: Division 1 and Division 2. Division 1 matches will be held in Indonesia, while Division 2 will take place in Hong Kong (China). The Vietnam national team is placed in Division 1, in Group B alongside Thailand, the Philippines, and Pakistan. Meanwhile, Group A of Division 1 consists of Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, and India. Division 2 includes Group A with Hong Kong (China), Myanmar, Brunei, and Group B featuring Cambodia, Laos, and Timor-Leste.

The adoption of a two-division model is seen as a step toward creating a more balanced competitive environment among teams of similar levels. This not only reduces lopsided matches but also opens up promotion opportunities, providing additional motivation for Division 2 teams to strive. At the same time, clashes between strong teams such as Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, and Malaysia promise to elevate the tournament's appeal.

Goal to elevate regional football

According to FIFA's announcement, the detailed match schedule and official regulations will be released in the near future. Currently, member associations are completing their registration procedures as per FIFA's guidelines to prepare for the kick-off. With a host of new features regarding organizational model, competition format, and FIFA ranking points, the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 is expected to open a new chapter for Southeast Asian football.
