Messi officially returns to the United States after the World Cup

Following his post-World Cup 2026 rest, Lionel Messi is back in the U.S. to link up with Inter Miami, poised to return to action and pursue new objectives this season.

Lionel Messi has officially returned to Inter Miami's headquarters. after more than a week of rest since the Argentina national team lost to Spain in the 2026 World Cup final.

According to confirmation from Inter Miami, the 39-year-old superstar was present at the training center in Fort Lauderdale, Florida on July 29. ESPN sources reported that Messi took part in the session with 100% fitness, marking the start of his return to competition.

Earlier, the Argentina captain spent time in his hometown Rosario to rest and be with his family. This return also allowed Messi to take care of his father, Mr. Jorge Messi, who is undergoing treatment for an illness that the family has not disclosed in detail.

The 2026 World Cup ended with mixed emotions for Messi. Although he scored 8 goals and provided 4 assists, playing a key role in taking Argentina to the final, he could not help the Albiceleste successfully defend their title as they lost to Spain after a thrilling 120 minutes.

Immediately after the match, Messi shared his feelings on social media. "The pain is immense and it will take time for this wound to heal. But I will always cherish the incredible things this team has accomplished, the comebacks, the fighting spirit, and the love of the fans that helped us once again stand among the strongest teams in the world."

Having just gone through a nearly 50-day World Cup campaign, Messi did not feature in Inter Miami's recent matches against Chicago Fire, CF Montréal, and the 2026 MLS All-Star Game.

Coach Guillermo Hoyos confirmed that the coaching staff will not rush Messi back onto the pitch. "Rest is very important. We want Messi to return only when he is fully ready both physically and mentally. There is no specific timeline for his comeback."

If the recovery process goes smoothly, Messi is likely to make his return for Inter Miami in the early stages of the 2026 Leagues Cup. For now, the Florida-based team will host Columbus Crew in MLS before kicking off their Leagues Cup campaign against Atlético de San Luis on August 5.
