Philippines unexpectedly withdraws, U20 Vietnam faces difficulties

The withdrawal decision of the U20 Philippines has significantly changed the situation of the 2027 AFC U20 Asian Cup qualifiers, with U20 Vietnam among the teams experiencing a clear impact.

With only about a month left before the 2027 AFC U20 Asian Cup qualifiers kick off, Asian football has unexpectedly encountered a major shake-up as U20 Philippines decided to withdraw from the tournament. This move not only reduces Group A from four to three teams but also brings about changes in how the results of the best second-placed teams are calculated, thereby directly affecting the chances of U20 Vietnam competing for a spot in the next round.

According to confirmation from the AFC, after U20 Philippines withdrew, Group A now consists of only three teams: South Korea, Kyrgyzstan, and Lebanon. This change has forced the organizers to adjust the method of comparing the performances of second-placed teams. Instead of considering all match results as usual, the results against the last-placed team in each group will not be counted. The new regulation is expected to make the race for tickets to the finals more intense and unpredictable.

For U20 Vietnam, this is not good news. Coach Yutaka Ikeuchi's team is in Group C alongside three very strong opponents: Iran, North Korea, and Palestine. This is considered one of the toughest groups in the qualifiers. In a context where competing for the top spot is far from easy, aiming for a berth as one of the best second-placed teams has also become more challenging due to the changed criteria for evaluating results.

Aware of the challenges ahead, U20 Vietnam is actively preparing for this important campaign. The team is expected to have a training camp in Japan from August 8 to 17 to refine their playing style and improve fitness before entering the tournament. The advantage of the red-shirted squad is that they will play on home soil at Viet Tri Stadium (Phu Tho), where Group C matches will take place from August 31 to September 6.

Meanwhile, the decision of U20 Philippines to withdraw could cause the team to be relegated to the Development Phase in the next cycle. Currently, the AFC U20 Asian Cup qualifiers are divided into two levels: the Qualification Phase, where teams compete for spots in the finals, and the Development Phase, for lower-ranked teams aiming for promotion.

The sudden withdrawal of U20 Philippines has created a ripple effect across the entire 2027 AFC U20 Asian Cup qualifiers. For U20 Vietnam, the mission to secure a ticket to the finals has now become even more difficult, especially if they have to compete through the second-placed slot. This means that Coach Yutaka Ikeuchi's team will need to aim for the best possible results in every match if they want to realize their goal of attending the biggest youth football festival on the continent.
