A hat-trick on his debut helped Indonesia crush Cambodia 5-1, not only securing the first three points of the ASEAN Cup 2026 but also raising hopes for a "penalty box monster" capable of transforming Garuda's attack.

According to a Vietnam News Agency correspondent in Jakarta, in the third match of Group A, Indonesia is considered far superior as they face Timor-Leste on neutral ground in Chonburi, Thailand. After an explosive start, coach John Herdman's side aims to secure another victory while improving their goal difference ahead of the much-anticipated clash with the Vietnam national team.

What particularly caught the attention of experts was not just the 5-1 win over Cambodia, but how Mitchell Baker made his mark. The 20-year-old striker, standing at 1.97m, capitalized almost perfectly on his chances, completing a hat-trick with only three shots on target. His positioning, heading, finishing inside the box, and sharpness in the final runs quickly made him seen as the solution to the striker problem Indonesia has lacked for years.

Born in Australia with an Indonesian mother, Baker grew up in a modern football environment before moving to the US to study and play. In just over two years at the high school level, he scored 141 goals, won the Golden Boot twice in a row, and was voted the US High School Player of the Year by the American Soccer Coaches Association in 2023. Later at Georgetown College, he continued to prove his goalscoring ability with 18 goals and 7 assists in 42 matches, before being selected by Colorado Rapids in the MLS Draft.

Baker's strength is not only about scoring goals. He is a modern striker who can hold up the ball, link up with the second line, drag defenders, press, and create space for teammates. This is the type of "number 9" that Indonesia has been missing for years.

Previously, Indonesia had many technically gifted players like Rafael Struick, Ole Romeny, or Ramadhan Sananta, but none truly gave the feeling of a proper target striker. The "Land of a Thousand Islands" team often controlled possession well but lacked finishing in the box.
