The 2026 FIFA ASEAN Cup faces the risk of being 'blacked out' in Vietnam.

The 3 million USD asking price is driving the 2026 FIFA ASEAN Cup rights into a corner, causing Vietnamese supporters to confront a worrying possibility of a blackout.

The broadcast package includes 20 matches, with 13 in Division 1 and 7 in Division 2. On average, each match costs about 150,000 USD, nearly 3.9 billion VND. The actual figure increases when production, transmission, and promotional costs are added. The pressure to recoup investment falls mainly on matches involving the Vietnamese national team, while neutral or Division 2 fixtures struggle to generate commensurate advertising appeal. The 3 million USD price tag thus becomes a significant barrier for domestic media outlets.

FIFA announced the organization plan FIFA ASEAN Cup in October 2025, featuring member associations in Southeast Asia and following the development model of the FIFA Arab Cup. FIFA's sponsorship enhances the tournament's brand and professional appeal. However, this is the first edition, with no real data yet on viewership, advertising revenue, or commercial viability in Vietnam.

Compared to previous deals in the market, 3 million USD is not the highest offer. The rights for the 2020 AFF Cup were reported by domestic media at around 5 million USD. Although the final contract value was not disclosed, that tournament had a long history and consistent appeal from Vietnam's national team matches.

The disparity is also evident in the ASIAD editions. In 2014, the exclusive rights package was offered at 400,000 USD, while the non-exclusive package was 200,000 USD. By ASIAD 2018, the asking price rose to 3 million USD, before VOV completed the deal for under 1.5 million USD with support from businesses.

The 2023 ASIAD 19 set a more notable precedent. The rights price in Vietnam initially reached 15 million USD, then dropped to around 7 million USD, but still no buyer was found. As a result, domestic audiences could not watch the games on channels holding the rights in Vietnam.

These figures show that rights prices depend heavily on the ability to recoup investment, rather than being determined solely by the scale or reputation of the tournament. For the 2026 FIFA ASEAN Cup, revenue is likely concentrated in a few matches involving the Vietnamese team, while the buyer must pay for all 20 fixtures.

The risk of a "blackout" will become a reality if the gap between the asking price and the ability to pay is not narrowed. The rest of the negotiation depends on how the seller adjusts the rights package and the ability to mobilize resources from domestic media outlets and sponsor companies.
