Cole Palmer is thrilled to be reunited with his best friend Morgan Rogers at Chelsea, and is determined to show his value following the disappointment of being omitted from England’s World Cup squad.
Cole Palmer spent a significant portion of his pre-match interview ahead of the friendly against Tottenham talking about Morgan Rogers, the new signing who joined Chelsea for a fee of up to £117 million.
The two have been close friends since they both came through the ranks at Manchester City’s academy. Palmer even knew about Rogers’ move to Chelsea before it was made public, while the deal was still being kept under wraps among senior management at Stamford Bridge.
“That was a very hard secret to keep, but I managed to keep it. Everyone knows how good he is. Rogers is also one of my closest friends, so I’m really happy he’s here.”, Palmer said with a smile.
Palmer believes that their different styles can complement each other. Rogers possesses excellent physical attributes, often driving forward with the ball and putting direct pressure on defenses, while Palmer stands out with his passing, ability to link play, and skill in tight spaces.
“I think we are two different players. He’s stronger than me physically, both on and off the ball. Rogers likes to carry the ball forward, while I prefer to make passes. So I think we can play well together,” Palmer commented.
The interview atmosphere turned lighthearted when Palmer was asked about the crossed-arms and shoulder-rubbing celebration, a pose that has become his trademark, linked to the nickname “Cold Palmer.”
In fact, Rogers had performed this celebration when they played together as kids. However, Palmer jokingly claimed that he holds the “copyright.”
“He does that move, I do it too. But I’ve already registered the copyright. If Rogers tries anything, the bailiffs might show up at his door,”Palmer said in jest.
Behind the cheerful remarks, the 24-year-old midfielder is entering the new season with great determination. Palmer was not named by head coach Thomas Tuchel in England’s squad for the World Cup after a season plagued by injuries.
Palmer had six weeks off before rejoining the team and admitted he felt quite bored being away from the pitch for so long. He now wants to quickly regain his rhythm, complete the full pre-season, and return to his best form.
Under head coach Xabi Alonso, Palmer is still expected to be the centerpiece of Chelsea’s play. The Spanish manager noted that his player has returned with a positive mindset and confirmed that the English midfielder will take on a leadership role on the pitch.
“He will be a leader. The better Cole Palmer plays, the stronger Chelsea becomes—that’s for sure,”Alonso stated.
The arrival of Rogers could provide Palmer with more support in attack. The new English signing’s ability to carry the ball and create chances is expected to open up more space for Palmer, while Chelsea’s No. 10’s passing can fully exploit the speed and strength of his close friend.
After years of following different paths, Palmer and Rogers now have the opportunity to become two key pieces in Xabi Alonso’s plan to rebuild Chelsea.
