Breaking sports news evening of August 2: Defender Truong Tien Anh suppresses grief ahead of Vietnam national team's crucial match; Manchester United considers signing Newcastle's young talent
Defender Truong Tien Anh learned of his grandmother's passing after arriving in Indonesia with the Vietnamese team on the afternoon of August 1 to prepare for the match against the hosts at the ASEAN Cup 2026. Despite suffering a major emotional shock, the 1999-born player decided to suppress his grief, stay with the team, and focus on the decisive match. On his personal page, Tien Anh posted a message of mourning and received much encouragement from teammates and friends. Currently, Vietnam ranks third in Group A after a 0-0 draw with Singapore, trailing Indonesia by 2 points and Singapore by 3. Coach Kim Sang Sik's squad needs at least one point at Pakansari Stadium to keep their hopes of reaching the semifinals alive. Manchester United is reportedly considering signing Arsenal's young talent Myles Lewis-Skelly to strengthen their left-back position. According to The Independent, the "Red Devils" are evaluating the feasibility of this deal, although Lewis Hall (Newcastle) remains the priority target.
Manchester United's move comes as Arsenal is expected to spend heavily to pursue Bruno Guimaraes and Vinicius Junior, which could force coach Mikel Arteta to consider selling players to balance the finances. However, there is no information suggesting Arsenal is willing to let Lewis-Skelly leave.

The 19-year-old player is highly rated by Arteta and contributed to Arsenal's Premier League 2025-2026 title. However, lack of regular playing time caused him to miss the chance to be included in England's squad for the 2026 World Cup. For Manchester United, Lewis-Skelly is seen as a versatile defender capable of playing both in defense and midfield.
Coach Jose Mourinho confirmed that Vinicius Junior will return to join Real Madrid early next week, partially dismissing speculation about the Brazilian star moving to Arsenal. According to Mourinho, Vinicius, along with Brahim and Bernardo, will return after the post-World Cup break, while players who participated in the semifinals and finals will join later.

"I am worried because I don't have all the players yet and I want three weeks to work with the full squad. But that is impossible. On Monday, Vini Jr, Brahim, and Bernardo will join. Then, one by one, they will return, until the players who played in the World Cup semifinals and finals come back. The last one will be Cucurella," said Mourinho.
Earlier, many sources indicated that Arsenal is closely monitoring Vinicius's contract situation and is ready to spend heavily if the opportunity to sign him arises.
According to The Times (UK), FIFA President Gianni Infantino may have received a salary of at least 30 million euros, not including bonuses, if the FIFA Forward Enterprise project was implemented. This project proposed selling 20% of the commercial rights of the World Cup through a company established by FIFA, aiming to generate about 3.65 billion euros for the organization.

However, the plan faced widespread criticism and was eventually canceled. Previously, Infantino repeatedly stated that he would not personally benefit from the project. After information about the expected salary was leaked, many media outlets questioned this claim. According to The Times, the income of over 30 million euros if the project succeeded would be about 10 times higher than the annual salary of approximately 3 million euros that Infantino currently receives as FIFA President.
Coach Hansi Flick admitted that Karim Adeyemi's debut did not meet expectations in the friendly match where Barcelona drew 2-2 with Birmingham City (lost 2-3 on penalties). The German tactician said the new signing had some poor handling and lost the ball leading to a goal conceded, but emphasized that Adeyemi has only had his first week of training and needs more time.

"Karim had a few situations where his handling was not really good. I think he still has a lot of potential to show, but this is only his first week of training, so that's normal," said Coach Flick.
Flick stated that he has seen the fellow countryman forward demonstrate impressive speed and finishing ability on the training ground, and believes the player will contribute a lot to Barcelona. Additionally, Flick was pleased with the performance of the young players, especially Hamza Abdelkarim after his brace of goals.
