United's goalkeeper position may have allowed Ruben Amorim many sleepless nights this season, with neither goalkeeper making an impression of consistency. Andre Onana made a number of mistakes in both the Premier League and the Europa League, and substitute goalkeeper Altay Baindier was also uncontested, with the same ups and downs after his appearance.
The 29-year-old's poor performances have left him constantly rumoured to be purged and the Saudi Arabian professional league is interested in him, but the Cameroonian goalkeeper seems to have decided to stay at Old Trafford, determined to prove himself again. However, the 26-year-old Turkish international has a different option, and he has decided to move to other clubs that can play in the main team in order to have a better chance of becoming Turkey's No.1 in next year's World Cup.
Baindil was a god against Arsenal in the FA Cup, saving two penalties, but that was his only bright spot. In the Carabao Cup against Tottenham and in the Premier League, he also made mistakes that led to the goal conceded. In the last 5 Premier League games, Baindier has played 3 games, but unfortunately Manchester United conceded 10 goals, no clean sheets, and finally lost all of them.
There is also uncertainty about the future of third goalkeeper Tom Heaton, with the 39-year-old former England international's current contract set to expire this summer. The Reds initially wanted him to retire and join the coaching staff, but Heaton turned down the offer and he didn't plan to hang up his boots yet. It has since been reported that the club have offered a further one-year contract extension, however, Heaton is said not to have accepted.
Heaton, who turns 39 in April next year, has not played since February 2023. Regarding his stay, the British media's statements are not unanimous, and "Man Evening" said that he may still stay.
But authoritative BBC transfer expert Simon Stone has revealed that United's two back-up goalkeepers have decided to leave. However, Amorim may not have the money to bring in a new first-choice goalkeeper and will choose a young challenger to compete with Onana. Belgian Antwerp Royal goalkeeper Senne Lammens has been linked with a move to Old Trafford, with the British media claiming that his name has been frequently discussed within the club recently.
Stone said: "I really don't think Manchester United have any intention of bringing in another experienced goalkeeper. Heaton will leave when his contract expires in the summer, and in fact, Baindier will certainly leave as well. United do have some good young goalkeepers like Elyh Harrison and Hubert Graczyk, but I hear Antwerp's Senna Lamans name a lot, so I wouldn't be surprised if United wanted him."
It is reported that Manchester United want to bring in young goalkeepers to see if they can squeeze out Onana. La Mang may fit that criterion: "At 22 years old, with no experience in European competition and no experience in playing for senior national teams, it feels like a big jump to make him the first choice. However, Lamans has a promising future, so if he comes, Amorim can judge for himself whether the Belgian is good enough."
The stats show that Laman, who moved to Antwerp from Club Brugge in the number 91 shirt, has kept 10 clean sheets this season and is good at making close-range saves, more like De Gea than Onana, and Manchester City and Bayern Munich are also rumoured to be interested in him. Antwerp have set a price tag of €20 million to €25 million for him, and whether Manchester United have the budget to bring in a back-up goalkeeper at this price may depend on Champions League qualification and the income from the sale.
The Manchester Evening News concludes that goalkeepers are not United's priority positions this summer, with strikers, no.10s and midfielders do, however, Amorim remains keen to bring in a new goalkeeper. Unless Onana also leaves, spending a fortune to sign a new No.1 goalkeeper will be on the agenda.
Onana's contract with Manchester United expires in 2028 and the club will need to sell £28.32 million for a transfer fee under the Premier League's PSR profitability and sustainability rules, with the Saudi Arabian Pro League being the only potential buyer.
The United hierarchy still intend to support Onana for another season and hope he can regain his form from the first three months of the season.
