According to TEAMtalk, despite Manchester United confident they could sign Brian Mbeumo before pre-season begins, manager Ruben Amorim wants to keep Mason Mount and he admires the England midfielder more than his predecessor Ten Hag.
Since his £60 million move from Chelsea in the summer of 2023, Mason Mount has had a rough time at Manchester United. The 26-year-old former England international, who won the Champions League in 2021 and was named MVP of the final, has been severely hampered by injury issues and inconsistent form, scoring just 46 goals and providing one assist in just 46 appearances for the Red Devils in two seasons.
Mount's future at United has been in doubt, but sources stress that Amorim is sticking with the player and is looking to make a difference in 2025/26.
Amorim has been revealed to be a 'big fan' of Mount and believes the latter can bring a unique influence to his team. Despite recent rumours that Mount could leave, sources say Mount himself is keen to continue working under Amorim given his excellent relationship with Amorim.
While United's board of directors wanted to sell a number of players as a step in the team's rebuild, Mount's desire to stay was in line with Amorim's, with the Red Devils' no.7 showing great enthusiasm for the manager's tactics.
It is reported that Amorim believes that Mount's work efficiency, technical ability and versatility are a perfect fit for his 343 style of play.
Even with United's official announcement of Cunha's arrival and their intention to continue with Mbeumo, Amorim still believes there is still a place for Mount, who could be a no.10 or drop back to play a no.8.
By the end of the season, Mount had already begun to be heavily used by Amorim, who had a goal and two assists in his final five games, and who had a big smile after watching Ai's brilliant lob against Athletic Bilbao.
However, Mason Mount was given a start in the Europa League final, causing Garnacho to be dissatisfied. "Grab me No. 7 and take me start!" Amorim opted to continue his support for Mount during the summer window and did not hesitate to sell Garnacho, but he will need the lover to put in a better performance to justify his £60 million transfer fee and £250,000 weekly salary.
Mount will at least have to avoid another long-term injury this season. Otherwise, while the relationship between Mount and Amorim is strong, it may not be enough to stop the United board from purging him.
Like Amorim, some United fans believe Mount can return to his Chelsea level, while others believe he should move to a mid-table side or even be promoted.
Former Manchester United right-back Paul Parker said: "I've said it before, but I just can't imagine him playing a key role at Manchester United. He doesn't have any outstanding qualities and now we really understand why Chelsea are happy to let him go. He was only given a chance to play because the rest of the United players were not available. Yes, he scored a goal as well, but I didn't see any more performance from him. Obviously, it's good for him to change teams."
Parker added: "I think he needs to figure out who he is as a player. What are his strengths? He's uncharacteristic, no one knows what he's good at, I don't even think he knows. He looks like a lost boy, so he first needs to find his identity. Otherwise, it will be difficult for him to succeed at his new club."
Sunderland veteran Marco Gabbiadini suggested Mount join promoted Sunderland: "If we want to spend money, then we need to bring in players like Mount...... He can't do it at Manchester United, but I think he's a player with a lot of potential. Maybe he's not fully playing yet, but a player like this would be great for us and he brings Premier League experience.'
