In Zürich, England got their European Women's Championship title defense back on track with a 4-0 win in Group D against the Netherlands, placing the two most recent tournament champions on three points ahead of the final group matches.

Eager to correct the mistakes from the France defeat, England made a strong start and created their first opportunity after four minutes when Lauren Hemp delivered a cross that Lauren James headed off target.

Hemp’s crossing ability was evident again five minutes later, but this time Alessia Russo failed to find the target from an ideal position.

The English pressure finally paid off midway through the half when a precise pass from goalkeeper Hannah Hampton found Russo, who, despite being pushed wide, assisted James, who cut in and struck the ball powerfully into the net from just inside the box.

The Dutch had managed to score at least once before halftime in their last three games, but aside from a misdirected Jill Roord attempt after 25 minutes, they failed to create any chances before the break.

The Lionesses continued to exploit the flanks, with Hemp heading wide from a Keira Walsh cross from the left, before Russo forced a save from Daphne van Domselaar after an Alex Greenwood cross.

The second goal arrived in first-half stoppage time when a partially cleared free-kick was tapped down by Russo to Georgia Stanway, whose powerful shot from distance deflected past Van Domselaar into the bottom corner.

Andries Jonker made three substitutions at halftime, but it seemed to backfire within minutes when Russo headed a Greenwood cross, only for the offside flag to save the Oranje.

However, the officials did not assist the Netherlandsjust before the hour mark, when a mishit shot from Ella Toone was blocked and fell perfectly for James, who calmly scored her second with the goalkeeper committed.

Sarina Wiegmann’s team secured the victory over her former players with a quarter of the game remaining, as Russo provided her third assist.

After chasing a long ball, she awaited Toone's support, shrugged off some sluggish challenges, and guided in the fourth goal.

The goal that Russo perhaps deserved was denied by an excellent save from Van Domselaar late in the game, as England stylishly avoided back-to-back defeats for the first time since 2021.

A victory over Wales will likely secure their place in the quarter-finals, while a third defeat in 14 matches means the Dutch will need to earn points in their final game against France.
