The reigning champions, England, advanced to the knockout phase of the UEFA Women’s European Championship by overpowering Wales 6-1 in St. Gallen, finishing second in Group D.

After a significant victory over the Netherlands on matchday two, England took less than 15 minutes to score, though the goal was not without its controversies.

Georgia Stanway was deemed to have been fouled by Carrie Jones in the penalty area following a VAR review, leading to the midfielder converting the resulting penalty for her third goal in four matches. Ella Toone then increased the Lionesses’ advantage just eight minutes later, scoring from the rebound after her initial attempt was blocked on the goal line.

Before the half-hour mark, England had already netted three goals as Toone provided an assist, crossing for Lauren Hemp to head in at the far post for her first goal since October.

After contributing three assists in the previous match, Alessia Russo finally scored her first goal of the tournament by tapping in Toone’s cutback, allowing the Lionesses to mirror their 4-0 victory over the Netherlands before halftime.

Wales had their chances, with Angharad James forcing Hannah Hampton into a save while Rachel Rowe and Jess Fishlock shot just over and wide respectively, but the Dragons were mostly outmatched.

England continued to seek more goals in the second half as Keira Walsh found substitute Jess Park with a brilliant pass, but her volley was expertly tipped onto the post by Olivia Clark. The goalkeeper also reacted quickly to deny Stanway’s shot before the hour mark, but she was powerless as England eventually scored their fifth goal.

Two substitutes linked up as Aggie Beever-Jones set up Beth Mead, who outmaneuvered her defender before calmly slotting the ball past Clark.

Wales substitute Hannah Cain then made her mark, firing Fishlock’s precise pass into the top corner to give the Red Wall a moment to celebrate. However, the Lionesses still found time to score a sixth when Mead and Beever-Jones combined again, this time Mead crossing for the young Chelsea forward to head in.

Another heavy loss means the debutants exit at the group stage - an almost unavoidable outcome given the quality of the other teams in the group. The defending champions, on the other hand, advance to the quarter-finals, extending their unbeaten head-to-head record to five matches.
