Manchester United are finally beginning to redirect their attention towards acquiring a striker who can enhance Ruben Amorim’s prospects for success.

Ollie Watkins, Benjamin Sesko, Jean-Philippe Mateta, and Nicolas Jackson have all been associated with the club in the last 48 hours.

Sources indicate that this surge of names signifies a growing determination to finally provide Amorim with what he genuinely requires.

As we reported recently, Amorim began pre-season without the new No.9 or goalkeeper he has been longing for.

The wait for a goalkeeper will persist, but there is renewed hope surrounding the striker position, after United submitted what is anticipated to be their final offer for Brentford’s forward Bryan Mbeumo.

Insiders have shared the latest updates regarding some of the forwards under consideration.

Affordable targets?

It is understood that United currently lack the financial resources to make any signing exceeding £40 million. However, any future player sales would contribute to the transfer budget.

Representatives of Aston Villa’s Watkins have been informally approached by third-party agents to assess his willingness to move. Initial feedback is believed to have been positive, although United are not in a position to pursue a deal at this time.

Sesko, on the other hand, has been ruled out for now. While RB Leipzig’s forward has been subject to scouting reports, there are concerns regarding how well he fits the style of play Amorim aims to implement.

Mateta continues to be seen as an affordable and viable target, with suggestions that a deal could be made in the range of £30–35 million. However, Crystal Palace are making significant efforts to retain him.

Jackson is viewed as an intriguing option, and there is some validity to recent links. At this point, however, United are reluctant to meet Chelsea’s £60 million asking price. The variety of challenges ahead in this striker search appears evident.

Interestingly, it is notable Christopher Nkunku has also resurfaced as a target this summer, with suggestions that new discussions may have occurred recently.

What’s the situation in attack?

United are actively considering the possibility of offloading Rasmus Hojlund - and remain optimistic about securing a new striker before the transfer window closes.

If their search extends into the latter phases of the window, it is not viewed as a crisis. Amorim could utilize Joshua Zirkzee or Matheus Cunha in a central role as a temporary solution.

The club has been firm in stating they will no longer be held hostage in transfer negotiations. Jim Ratcliffe made it clear last season that United’s financial strategy needed to change, warning they were heading toward disaster without significant reform.

However, frustration escalated earlier this week over Brentford’s valuation of Mbeumo, which continued to rise. United appeared unwilling to meet the £70 million asking price, but made a £65 million offer with an additional £5 million in add-ons as the player expressed his desire to join.

United must now demonstrate a similar level of commitment in their pursuit of a new goalscorer. The search for the right fit continues.
