The 32-year-old transitioned to the Bundesliga in 2023 after spending seven years withArsenal, where he became a crucial player over the years. There were previous links to a lucrative transfer to Saudi club Neom for the Swiss star.
Xhaka has been instrumental for the Bundesliga team during his two seasons at the club, making 99 appearances and aiding them in securing their first Bundesliga title in 2023-24 under the current Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso.
As reported by journalist David Ornstein, the playmaker is eager to return to the Premier League and seems to be targeting the newly promoted Black Cats as an ideal choice.
“Granit Xhaka has informed Bayer Leverkusen that he exclusively wants to join Sunderland as discussions between clubs proceed. An agreement is now established between the 32-year-old and Sunderland. The Swiss midfielder has requested Bayer Leverkusen to expedite the deal. Negotiations are ongoing.”
Xhaka would arrive at the Black Cats with an impressive record of 225 Premier League appearances, along with 17 goals and 24 assists, which could assist Sunderland in avoiding relegation.
Erik ten Hag was appointed as Leverkusen’s new head coach earlier this summer, succeeding Alonso, and may now need to address the loss of Xhaka after already seeing Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong depart for Liverpool.
