Ghana and Morocco engaged in a tense and fiercely contested Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) 2024 semi-final at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat on Tuesday, resulting in the host nation moving on to the final.

The match concluded 1-1 after extra time before Morocco prevailed 4-2 in the penalty shootout to secure a place in the final against Nigeria.

The Black Queens began strongly and controlled much of the first half. Their pressure resulted in an opening goal in the 26th minute when forward Stella Nyamekye scored from close range after Josephine Bonsu’s header was saved onto the post.

Ghana continued to press and had several chances to extend their lead through Doris Boaduwaa, Princess Marfo and Nyamekye. Despite missing these opportunities, the Black Queens appeared composed and managed the game, but Morocco gradually found their rhythm.

Just ten minutes into the second half, the hosts responded through winger Sakina Ouzraoui. Taking advantage of a defensive lapse, Ouzraoui controlled a looping deflected shot and slotted the ball past an advancing Cynthia Konlan.

The home crowd erupted, energizing their team for the remainder of the match as momentum shifted towards the North Africans.

Both teams then had numerous chances to find a winner, but despite sustained pressure from both sides, neither could break the deadlock in regulation or extra time, leading to a thrilling penalty shootout.

In the shootout, Morocco maintained their composure with precise execution, converting all four of their penalties. Ghana, however, stumbled when midfielder Evelyn Badu missed her third penalty by shooting wide, and Comfort Yeboah had her attempt saved by Moroccan goalkeeper Khadija Errmichi.

Black Queens' head coach Kim Lars Bjorkegren expressed his disappointment as the team missed out on a coveted final.

“I believe we were the better team when looking at the game statistics. Our goal has always been to win the gold in this group, and we were so close to reaching the finals. Now, I think we need to feel disappointed; we need to shed a few tears.”

This outcome marks a significant achievement for Morocco, who will compete in their second consecutive WAFCON final on home soil, aiming to secure their first-ever continental title and prevent Nigeria from claiming an unprecedented 10th championship.

For Ghana, the loss is heartbreaking following a determined performance. The Black Queens, competing in their first semi-final in nine years, continue their search for a first-ever WAFCON title. However, Bjorkegren’s team will have a chance at the bronze medal when they face South Africa on Friday.
