The Moroccan men's national team has made history by being the first to reach the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), setting the stage for what is anticipated to be an exciting tournament co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.

The two-time champions arrived at Kenya’s main airport in Nairobi - Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) - at 4:00 AM local time on Monday, ahead of the tournament designated for players competing in their national league competitions.

Only Morocco defender Marouane Louadni, who plays for AS FAR, addressed the media present at the airport to welcome the team, stating: “We are thrilled to be here and prepared for CHAN. I already love Nairobi; the weather is fantastic, and we are eager for a successful tournament.”

Group A, with matches scheduled at Kasarani and Nyayo Stadium, includes DR Congo, and Angola, as well as Zambia. Morocco aims to become the first nation to win the CHAN title three times, kicking off their campaign against Angola at Nyayo Stadium on Sunday.

Having won the tournament in 2018 on home soil and again in 2021 in Cameroon, Morocco is one of only two countries to have claimed the CHAN trophy twice, alongside DR Congo, whom they will meet in the group stage.

Kenya has a great opportunity

Meanwhile, Kenya's national team head coach Benni McCarthy is optimistic that the Harambee Stars have an excellent chance to advance from the group stage of the tournament.

“Honestly, it’s a significant challenge. Transitioning from player to coach, you always hear that to win anything, you must defeat the best,” said the South African legend as reported by CAFOnline.

“To achieve your goals and be the best, you must overcome tough teams in your path. We have a fantastic opportunity against two-time champions DR Congo and Morocco, as well as respected Angola and a formidable Zambia, who have always been present in African football.

“And now, we have a Kenya eager to experience the top level. This is our moment, and the squad we’ve assembled is hungry for success. What better way to start than in our own backyard?”

McCarthy further stated: “We will play our matches on our home turf in front of our fans, making this a perfect opportunity to excel and eliminate teams that could potentially reach the final early. This will be a significant challenge and a good test for the players as well. We will be ready, and come CHAN, I can confidently say that we will be a team that fears no one.”

Regarding the squad’s preparations, McCarthy mentioned: “I have observed many players in the league, and I know we have selected quality talent. I have also had the chance to train with several since my arrival, gaining firsthand experience working with these players and assessing them myself.

“I see their current levels and envision what we can achieve together. They possess the mentality, mindset, work ethic, and talent necessary to succeed. I am aware of their capabilities and what they can accomplish. Now, it’s just about translating that onto the pitch on matchday.”

Kenya will begin their campaign against DR Congo on August 3 at Kasarani, with home support expected to enhance the Harambee Stars’ aspirations.
