Brazil successfully defended their Women's Copa America title by winning against Colombia 5-4 in a penalty shootout on Saturday, securing their ninth continental championship following a dramatic final in Quito that ended 4-4.

The decisive match at Estadio Rodrigo Paz Delgado witnessed Colombia taking the lead three times, only for Brazil to respond each time.

Brazilian legend Marta forced extra time with a late equalizer and struck again in the 105th minute to seemingly secure victory.

However, a determined Colombia found yet another equalizer, taking the match to penalties, where Brazil's experience ultimately triumphed .

"I believe women's football has been progressing significantly. The trend is towards increased competitiveness. Everyone here deserved a match like this. Congratulations to Colombia as well," Brazil's Amanda Gutierres stated.

"This means a great deal. I think it's Brazil's responsibility. It's about that mentality of never giving up. That's a point of pride for Brazil. It holds significant meaning for Brazilians."

Both teams created early opportunities, but the first breakthrough arrived in the 25th minute when Colombia's Linda Caicedo finished off a neat passing sequence with a composed low shot from close range.

Brazil equalized in the dying moments of the first half when Angelina calmly converted a penalty after VAR confirmed a foul by Jorelyn Carabali on Gio Garbelini .

Colombia regained the lead in the 69th minute due to a Brazil own goal, with defender Tarciane attempting a routine back pass to goalkeeper Lorena but unaware that she had already moved off her line to collect the ball.

Gutierres equalized for Brazil again 10 minutes from the end with her sixth goal in the tournament, a powerful shot from Garbelini's pass, but striker Mayra Ramirez restored Colombia's lead by scoring after a swift counter-attack eight minutes later.

'Las Cafeteras' were close to clinching their first continental title until Marta, who was brought on as a late substitute, produced a moment of brilliance with a stunning equalizer six minutes into stoppage time, pushing the game into extra time.

Marta scored again in the 105th minute when she tapped in a fine cross from Angelina, but Colombia responded as Leicy Santos' brilliant free kick soared into the top corner in the 115th minute.

The penalty shootout mirrored the match's drama, with Colombia taking an early lead after Angelina's miss.

However, when Manuela Pavi failed to convert and goalkeeper Lorena saved Leicy Santos' attempt, Brazil gained the upper hand.

Marta had the opportunity to secure victory, but Katherine Tapia's save sent the shootout into sudden death, where Carabali's miss ultimately granted Brazil their ninth continental title.
