According to British media, Manchester United rejected offers from five clubs for Maguire this summer. The 32-year-old England center-back is in the final year of his contract, and the club has activated his priority renewal option. However, starting in January, the England international will be able to negotiate with overseas clubs.
It is reported that three Premier League clubs and two Serie A clubs have made offers to Manchester United, but Amorim has requested the club not to sell Maguire. The 40-year-old Portuguese manager trusts Maguire and has included him in the six-member leadership team of the squad.
British media states that Manchester United is even considering renewing his contract; "Big Head" might end his career at Manchester United. However, Maguire must accept a significant pay cut, as his current contract with the club pays him £190,000 per week. This contract was signed when he joined from Leicester City for a record fee in 2019. It is understood that negotiations for a possible renewal have not yet begun between the parties.
Clubs interested in Maguire are not limited to the Premier League and Serie A; Ligue 1's Marseille and Monaco, as well as Turkish clubs Fenerbahçe, Beşiktaş, and Galatasaray, are also keen on him. Fenerbahçe and Beşiktaş are managed by former Manchester United bosses Mourinho and Solskjær, respectively. Mourinho was the first to suggest that Manchester United sign Maguire, but Ed Woodward deemed the £70 million transfer fee too high, only bringing him in for £80 million after Solskjær took charge.
Initially, Maguire was a key player and captain for the team, but as he aged, he began to lose his starting position. In 2023, he nearly joined West Ham United, managed by former Red Devils boss David Moyes, for £30 million, but the transfer failed due to wage compensation issues.
After staying, Maguire has repeatedly saved Ten Hag, changing his image in the eyes of fans, who now praise him as a true man. Since Amorim took over, he has also relied heavily on Maguire, even using him as a makeshift striker in critical moments! In January, Amorim publicly stated that Maguire "has become a leader again," as he reassumed the captaincy in the absence of Bruno Fernandes.
During this summer's training, Maguire initially did not travel with the team to the United States for training but later joined the Premier League's summer series, coming off the bench against West Ham United and Everton, and starting against Bournemouth. It is reported that this was due to injuries affecting Maguire's fitness.
However, Maguire stated on Manchester United's official website that he is ready to contribute to the revival of the Red Devils in the new season. "I just want to be part of a successful team this season. I think last season was a tough one for everyone, for our entire squad, and for the club as a whole," Maguire said. "This season, there are no excuses; we will have plenty of time to prepare for the Premier League matches, and we must ensure we are ready. Personally, I need to make sure I can play, stay healthy, and be prepared to give my all for this team and club!"
Maguire believes that missing out on the Champions League next season might turn out to be a blessing in disguise for Manchester United. "Amorim has repeatedly emphasized that we don't spend enough time on the training ground. This preseason has certainly been a tough test for leg strength, but mostly it's been about tactics. Tactical training is much better than running around poles or on the field. This has been an enjoyable preseason, and we've all learned a lot, gaining a deeper understanding of the tactical system. Now we just need to apply that understanding in matches."
The Red Devils have performed well in warm-up matches, remaining unbeaten and lifting the Premier League Summer Series trophy. However, Maguire emphasized that only the Premier League is the true test. "We have shared meals and enjoyed some happy moments together, and we have really worked hard on the training ground. The entire team has been putting in the effort, so it feels good. Clearly, when the season starts, we must prove this, as that is when the real games begin. We hope to perform exceptionally well and achieve victories."
