At 29 years old Akpom has transferred to Ipswich Town on a one-year loan agreement, which includes a mandatory purchase clause if Ipswich Town achieves promotion to the Premier League.
The former English youth international found himself sidelined at Ajax, where he was deemed surplus to requirements due to his high salary. Earning €5 million annually, the unwanted Akpom was the highest-paid player at Ajax.
Transfer episode
Akpom was involved in a strange transfer episode with three clubs this summer. Birmingham City, Middlesbrough, and Ipswich Town all vied for Akpom's signature, with him canceling a medical appointment at Birmingham after Ipswich expressed interest.
The Arsenal academy graduate joined Ajax in 2023 from Middlesbrough, who received €12 million for the forward. In 68 appearances for the Amsterdam club, Akpom netted 23 goals. He spent the latter half of last season on loan at Ligue 1 team Lille, where he scored three goals in 16 matches.
