Despite Barcelona's recent significant win, Ronald Araujo, a core member of the Catalan club, candidly stated his wish for the leadership to enhance the defensive line.
Ronald Araujo made some notable comments following Barcelona's victory over Real Mallorca, a match in which the Catalan side managed to keep a clean sheet for the first time this season. The Uruguayan defender asserted that under Hansi Flick's management, the team had engaged in numerous discussions about tightening the defense, an element considered crucial for achieving a more balanced style of play.
Flick is renowned for his aggressive attacking football philosophy and high defensive line. However, this approach has also left many gaps at the back, causing Barcelona to pay the price on several occasions last season. Araujo acknowledged this and mentioned that he and his teammates had deliberated extensively to find solutions to minimize conceding goals.
Araujo commented after the match: “I’m very pleased that the team kept a clean sheet. This is something we always remind each other about. I’ve had many discussions with Cubarsí and Joan about needing to concede fewer goals this season.”
The 25-year-old defender also asserted that he is in the best physical and mental condition: “With our current playing style, we are always vulnerable to opponents exploiting weaknesses. However, if we can add more personnel and address this flaw, Barcelona will be more stable and won’t always have to rely on scoring a lot of goals. Personally, I feel very happy. I had a good pre-season, I’m in great shape, and that provides the necessary confidence.”
In the match against Mallorca, Araujo started alongside young talent Pau Cubarsí. This duo worked well together, helping Barca maintain their goal even while playing with a reduced squad in the final minutes. This is a positive sign for Hansi Flick's efforts to bolster the defense, a key factor for maintaining stability for Barcelona in the long run.
Inigo Martinez's departure has opened up a significant opportunity for Araujo to establish himself as a key player. However, he still faces fierce competition from Andreas Christensen for a starting spot. Nevertheless, with his leadership spirit and strong determination, Araujo is showing that he could become an indispensable part of the rebuilding plan for Barca under Flick.
