Manchester United are reportedly confident about signing the Belgian goalkeeper! Summer transfer plans may be altered due to recent matches, and Onana needs to prove himself.

Following the events of the first Premier League match, Manchester United are now considering a move for Royal Antwerp’s Senne Lammens with greater urgency in the last two weeks of the transfer window. Ruben Amorim’s team has suffered from goalkeeping errors multiple times since last season, causing them to lose points, so their summer plans may be reshaped as a result.

Altay Bayındır’s weak performance in the 0-1 defeat against Arsenal has brought renewed scrutiny to the goalkeeper position. In that match, Amorim opted not to use André Onana, who had already resumed training before the game, leading to further questions about his decisions.

United dominated the game against Arsenal, and if Bayındır had controlled his area and dealt with the corner better, they could have avoided defeat. Although Saliba was accused of grabbing the goalkeeper’s arm, the 26-year-old Turkish international should have been strong enough to clear the ball from danger. Instead, he spilled the ball to Carraficio at the far post, gifting the opponents an easy goal.

Bayındır’s appearance came after Onana missed preseason due to a hamstring injury; this was his second chance this year. Unfortunately, despite fully participating in pre-season training and friendlies, Bayındır failed to meet expectations—just as he replaced the error-prone Onana last year, he too made costly mistakes.

Statistics show Bayındır has conceded 21 goals in his 12 Manchester United appearances. Last season, United let in four goals in three matches against Tottenham, Newcastle, and Brentford—all with Bayındır in goal away from home.

Although Amorim publicly stated he does not blame Bayındır and expressed satisfaction with United’s three current goalkeepers, he is actually unhappy with his options and hopes the club will seek a new solution for this season.

Earlier in the summer window, Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martínez was on United’s radar, and the 32-year-old Argentina international was open to the move. However, Villa refused a loan and told United it had to be a permanent transfer or nothing. United are unlikely to spend £40 million on Martínez and won’t pursue PSG’s 26-year-old Italian keeper Donnarumma either, as his wages are too high. Despite rumors that PSG would sell for £26 million, the latest reports suggest the price is now €40–50 million.

As a result, Bayındır’s mistakes may prompt United to revisit their goalkeeper search, with Lammens believed to be the top target. The 23-year-old Belgian could be available for just €15–20 million.

United originally planned to use their remaining transfer budget on a midfielder, with Carlos Baleba once the top choice, but that option has now been dropped and no alternative named yet. The club is considering whether to allocate part of the funds to strengthen the goalkeeping position.

United have recently reopened talks about Lammens, who has been on their shortlist all summer. The talented keeper has also attracted interest from Inter Milan, but it’s understood he is keen to join the Red Devils.

Sources at United say the club is confident they can win the race for Lammens, provided they act decisively. Having failed to find a buyer for Onana or even sell Bayındır this summer, plans to bring in a new goalkeeper were put on hold. However, following the 0-1 loss to Arsenal, circumstances are set to change.

If the goalkeeper situation fluctuates in the upcoming August fixtures—including this Sunday’s Premier League trip to Fulham, next week’s League Cup match away to Grimsby, and the final home game of the month against Burnley—the need for a new keeper will become even more urgent. The pressure on Onana and Bayındır to prove themselves is mounting rapidly.
