With the completion of the 2025 US Open singles qualifying rounds, the main singles draw has now been fully released. Among the highly watched Chinese players, Zhang Shuai and Wang Xiyu are the only two qualifiers to have won three consecutive matches to reach the main draw.
Zhang Shuai and Wei Sijia met in the final round of the women's singles qualifying, where the more experienced Zhang Shuai convincingly defeated her opponent 6-1, 6-3, advancing to a Grand Slam main draw after winning three straight qualifying matches for the first time in 17 years.
This marks Zhang Shuai’s 12th appearance in the US Open main draw in her career; her best result was reaching the fourth round in 2022, while last year she exited early in the first round of the women’s singles.
Former US Open junior women’s singles champion Wang Xiyu also secured a victory, defeating Charaeva 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 in three sets. This is her fifth time competing in the US Open main draw. Due to injury-related rest after the Australian Open this year, Wang’s world ranking dropped significantly, and she failed to advance at both the French Open and Wimbledon.
After Sun Fajing was eliminated in the second round, Wu Yibing, the last remaining male singles qualifier, faced Kim in the final round but was swept 6-3, 6-2. Throughout the match, Wu’s opponent was flawless on both serve and forehand, and also performed excellently with backhand in the final stages, ending the contest prematurely.
According to his schedule, Wu Yibing will rest for a week before starting the Asian season, with his next tournament being the Shanghai CH100. We look forward to Wu scoring more points during the Asian circuit.
With the main draw now fully revealed, the Chinese team’s overall draw luck can only be described as “terrible.” In women’s singles, Wang Yafan and Yuan Yue both drew seeded players in the first round; Wang Yafan will face the 10th seed and local favorite Navarro, while Yuan Yue is set to play against [17] Samsonova across the net.
Among those who qualified, Zhang Shuai and Wang Xiyu also drew strong seeded opponents; Zhang will face the 16th seed Bencic in the first round, and Wang’s first match will be against the 25th seed Ostapenko.
Although Zhu Lin and Wang Xinyu did not draw seeded players, their first-round opponents are still formidable. Zhu Lin will play Potapova in the opening round, and if she advances, she will compete for a third-round spot against the winner between Parks and [5] Andreescu.
Wang Xinyu’s first-round opponent is the local player Dollinghead, and if she wins, she will face the winner between [13] Aleksandrova and Sevastova in the second round.
The men’s singles draw is also challenging. Bu Yunchaokete’s first opponent is wildcard Varuue, with a potential second-round clash against [27] Shapovalov; Shang Juncheng, if he defeats Berrettini in the first round, could face [2] Alcaraz in the second round!
So, who do you think among all the Chinese players competing in the singles at this year’s US Open will be able to secure a victory?(Source: Tennis Home, Author: Barbie)
