Janice Tjen has made history in Indonesian tennis by becoming the first player from her country in 22 years to win a singles match at a Grand Slam. This accomplishment not only secured her a spot in the US Open second round but also gave her the chance to face her idol, the 2021 US Open champion Emma Raducanu, on the grand Flushing Meadows stage.
The 23-year-old Tjen caused a major upset by defeating the 24th seed Veronika Kudermetova 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 in a match lasting 2 hours and 11 minutes on Sunday. This dramatic win set up a clash with Raducanu, who shocked the tennis world by winning the US Open as a qualifier four years ago.
Tjen’s path to participating in the tournament is an inspiring tale. She became the first Indonesian to compete in singles at a Grand Slam since Angelique Widjaja at the 2004 US Open.
"Emma was a huge inspiration to me," Tjen said, recalling when she witnessed Raducanu’s stunning run to the US Open title in 2021. "At that time, I was in college and sidelined by injury. Watching her play made me long to be on such a big stage myself."

Before turning professional, Tjen excelled playing for the University of Oregon and later Pepperdine, where she finished as the NCAA doubles runner-up in 2024. Graduating with a sociology degree this spring, she faced a major decision: chase her tennis dream or pursue another career.
"During my college years, I often wondered if I should try professional tennis," Tjen admitted. "In the end, my coaches at Pepperdine encouraged me: ‘Give it a try, at least for two years.’ I trusted them, and now I’m here, competing on the world’s biggest stage."
Tjen entered the US Open in excellent form, holding a 55-10 record this year, mostly from lower-level tournaments. Notably, from May to July, she dominated ITF events with a 27-match winning streak, capturing five prestigious titles.
In her 2025 US Open match on Sunday, Tjen displayed incredible composure. Even after losing a 3-1 lead in the second set, she calmly regained control and finished the match with a precise left-handed volley at the decisive point.
