Day 3 of the 2025 US Open: Wang Xinyu Stands as the Sole Chinese Female Singles Hope, Gauff Survives a Narrow First-Round Thriller

On August 26 local time, the last day of the first round for the 2025 US Open men’s and women’s singles main draws took place, with Wang Xinyu achieving a positive opening and remaining the sole singles player from mainland China, whereas Bu Yunchaokete was eliminated in the first round, yet to claim a Grand Slam main draw win.

Wang Xinyu battled against local player Dolehide for 2 hours and 11 minutes, winning 2-6, 6-4, 6-2. She advanced to the second round of the US Open women’s singles for the third consecutive year, earning the first main draw victory for the Chinese contingent at this year’s US Open. After dropping the first set, Wang gradually regained her rhythm in the latter part of the match and ultimately completed a hard-fought comeback.

In the post-match interview, Wang Xinyu said, “The first match at a Grand Slam is never easy, especially with the noisy surroundings. It was a very tough match; my serve percentage was low in the first set. I took a bathroom break to slowly adjust during that time. Returning to the court, my mind was clearer, and I was able to execute the tactical plan more simply and decisively.”

Wang Xinyu’s second-round opponent will be 13th seed Aleksandra Alexandrova, who defeated Sevastova 6-4, 6-1. The two have met three times before, with Wang leading 2-1, including a victory after saving match points in last year’s Wuhan Open quarterfinals.

Bu Yunchaokete made his second consecutive appearance in the US Open men’s singles main draw but lost in the first round 1-6, 4-6, 6-7(1) to French wildcard entrant Royer. In his five Grand Slam main draw appearances to date, he has yet to advance past the first round and has lost all seven tiebreaks played in Grand Slam events. Bu began working with Belgian coach Marisse this month and reached the quarterfinals of the ATP 250 Winston-Salem Open last week. After this US Open, he will compete in the Chinese season—where ranking points are crucial—with hopes of strong performances on home soil (semifinals in Hangzhou, semifinals in the China Open).

No major upsets occurred in the men’s singles, with all seeded players advancing smoothly. World No. 1 Sinner took only 1 hour and 38 minutes to defeat Kopriva in straight sets, securing a strong start to his title defense. Third seed Zverev also advanced in three sets, beating Tabillo to reach the second round. Tenth seed Musetti won in four sets against French power hitter Pericard, marking his second victory since his French Open semifinal run. Home favorite and 14th seed Paul defeated Danish youngster Moller in straight sets to move on. Seeds Deminar, Bublik, Shapovalov, Aliassime, Cerundolo, and Tsitsipas also claimed wins.

The biggest upset of the day happened on the women’s side, where 37-year-old German veteran Sigmund caused a shock by defeating 20th seed Schneider in three sets, earning her first US Open main draw singles win since 2019. Sigmund has shone this season’s Grand Slams, having beaten top 10 players Zheng Qinwen and Keys at the Australian Open and Wimbledon respectively. Local 26th seed Kenin was ousted in three sets by compatriot Kruger.

Both title contenders Swiatek and Gauff advanced past the first round, though their matches were quite different. Swiatek maintained her good form from winning Cincinnati, dropping only three games in a straight-sets win over Colombian Arango. Gauff, however, endured a tough battle, playing nearly three hours against Australian Tomjanovic before narrowly winning in three sets. The American committed 10 double faults during the match. Prior to the US Open, Gauff partnered with renowned biomechanical coach Gavin McMillen, who previously worked with Sabalenka, aiming to improve her serve inconsistencies after her double fault issues in Cincinnati drew attention.

Naomi Osaka

Two-time champion and 23rd seed Naomi Osaka won in straight sets against Minnen, earning her first victory since the Montreal final and reaching her 50th hard-court Grand Slam win. The Japanese star appeared on court in a dazzling red dress adorned with rhinestones; her jacket, shoes, headband, headphones, and even the labubu doll on her bag were all red, making for a striking look. Eighth seed and local favorite Anisimova defeated Australian player Burel to advance to the second round. Seeds Maya, Noskova, and Kostyuk also secured wins.
