The 2025 US Open has always been recognized as a tournament full of unexpected moments relative to the other three Grand Slams.
Leandro Riedi, ranked 435th globally, impressively advanced to the third round of the year’s final Grand Slam event: the 2025 US Open, making him the lowest-ranked player still competing in this year’s tournament.
To reach the third round of a Major for the first time in his career, Riedi endured an emotionally charged match against Francisco Cerundolo, who is ranked 416 places above him. Riedi started poorly, falling behind 2-0 and losing his first service game in the third set.
However, with great determination, the Swiss player achieved the unthinkable. Riedi remained steadfast with his powerful and decisive style, overcoming Cerundolo’s endurance by winning the next two sets to push the match into a final deciding set.
Despite being broken early in the final set, Riedi played exceptionally well, breaking his opponent’s serve three consecutive times to win the match 3-2 (6-3; 6-4; 4-6; 4-6; 2-6) after 3 hours and 37 minutes of intense competition.
Notably, in the previous round, Cerundolo also experienced a similar comeback: losing the first two sets to Matteo Arnaldi before turning the match around. This time, he witnessed his opponent create a miracle.
Born in 2002, Leandro Riedi is a promising young Swiss tennis player. He has won 4 ATP Challenger Tour titles and 3 ITF World Tennis Tour titles, and was close to breaking into the top 100 before suffering a knee injury that required surgery last year, significantly affecting his career progression.
After a series of tournaments to regain form, Riedi finally enjoyed success at this year’s US Open. Entering the qualifiers due to protected ranking, the 23-year-old defeated Luka Pavlovic, Otto Virtanen, and Garrett Johns to reach the main draw, then went on to beat Pedro Martinez and Francisco Cerundolo, becoming the lowest-ranked player to reach the third round of a Grand Slam in 25 years.
Riedi’s next opponent will be Kamil Majchrzak, who also caused an upset by winning a thrilling five-set match against the No. 9 seed Karen Khachanov.
