Stefanos Tsitsipas keeps up his unstable performance this year and is nearing a fall from the top 30 rankings.
The former world No. 3, Stefanos Tsitsipas, unexpectedly threatened Daniel Altmaier after their second-round match at the 2025 US Open concluded this morning, August 29, Vietnam time.
Right after Altmaier finished the match with a precise volley at the net, the German player collapsed on the court in celebration, then approached the net to shake hands with Tsitsipas. However, Altmaier could never have imagined what Tsitsipas said to him afterward.
"Next time, don’t wonder why I hit you like that!"Tsitsipas warned, then complained about Altmaier’s use of an underarm serve in the fourth set—a tactic some still view as disrespectful to opponents. Altmaier exchanged a few words but then completely ignored Tsitsipas’s remarks.

Stefanos Tsitsipas argues with Daniel Altmaier after losing in the second round of the 2025 US Open
Tsitsipas and Altmaier delivered a tightly contested match with thrilling moments until the very last points. Altmaier won the first set tie-break, then Tsitsipas took a 2-1 lead, but Altmaier claimed the crucial fourth set, leading to a decisive fifth set.
In the final set, the German faced three break points and one match point but stayed composed to level the score at 5-5. In the 11th game, Tsitsipas made an error, losing the point, and Altmaier capitalized flawlessly to secure a 3-2 victory (7-6; 1-6; 4-6; 6-3; 7-5) after 4 hours and 26 minutes of play.
Altmaier’s two matches so far have both gone to five sets, totaling over 9 hours on court. Born in 1998, he is known for his exceptional stamina and preference for long, grueling matches.
Altmaier’s win over Tsitsipas, who was previously defeated by Ly Hoang Nam at the 2019 Da Nang Open, advances him to the third round of this year’s US Open, where he will face the 8th seed Alex De Minaur.
Meanwhile, Stefanos Tsitsipas continues his unstable performance, and if he does not improve, falling out of the top 30 soon seems inevitable.
