Following Wang Xinyu’s loss to the 13th seed Aleksandrova in the second round of the US Open women's singles, there are no more players from mainland China left in this year’s singles event. Thankfully, women’s doubles, a traditional stronghold for Chinese tennis, still has multiple pairs competing. Let’s focus now on how China’s female players are doing in the doubles matches!
#3 pairs eliminated in the first round#
Zhu Lin / Zheng Saisai
[10] Jiang Xinyu / Zhan Haoqing
Tang Qianhui / Stosur
The women's doubles first round at the US Open has concluded. As the 10th seeds, Jiang Xinyu and Zhan Haoqing battled non-seeded opponents Wang Yafan and Aoyama Shuko for three hours but ultimately lost 7-6, 4-6, 6-7, failing to advance.
Last year’s doubles semifinalist Zhan Haoqing exited early this time and failed to defend her semifinal points, so her doubles ranking is expected to drop. The victorious Wang Yafan and Aoyama Shuko will face Li / Grubusic in the next round.
Since Wang Xinyu did not participate in doubles this year, her usual partner Zheng Saisai teamed up with veteran Zhu Lin. However, they lost 4-6, 4-6 to the experienced duo Niculescu / Sevastova and missed out on advancing.
Also eliminated in the first round was young player Tang Qianhui. Facing the strong pair Bolt / Katar, she and partner Stosur were narrowly defeated 1-6, 7-5, 6-7.
#5 pairs advance to the second round#
Xu Yifan / Yang Zhaoxuan
[8] Guo Hanyu / Panova
Wang Yafan / Aoyama Shuko
[12] Zhang Shuai / Aleksandrova
Yuan Yue / Osorio
As the highest-seeded Chinese player pair in this year’s US Open women’s doubles, Guo Hanyu continued to partner with Panova. They dominated their multinational opponents Desiuk / Pridanina 6-1, 6-3 to advance easily in the first round.
However, in the second round, they will face an early all-Chinese showdown against Xu Yifan and Yang Zhaoxuan, who struggled but managed to defeat the wildcard pair Pahare 6-0, 5-7, 7-5 to reach round two.
Also advancing comfortably were the 12th seeds Zhang Shuai and Aleksandrova. Their strong coordination led to a straight-sets 6-2, 6-2 victory over the Christian duo. They will face Bolt / Katar in the next round.
Additionally, Yuan Yue and Osorio secured a valuable doubles win at this year’s US Open. After a tough three-set battle, they defeated the 15th-seeded Mihalikova pair 6-2, 4-6, 6-4. We hope more Chinese players will reach deeper rounds this year!(Source: Tennis Home, Author: Barbie)
