Tough! Chinese female players all lost and were eliminated at the US Open

Looking at the list of quarterfinalists in both men’s and women’s singles, we can see that top seeds are rarely absent. The women’s quarterfinals especially feature numerous Grand Slam finalists, making every upcoming match a highlight.

Additionally, the third round of the women's doubles at this US Open deserves attention. Four pairs including Chinese female players competed, but unfortunately none secured a win, all failing to advance to the women’s doubles quarterfinals this year.

After Yuan Yue exited in the first round of singles, she paired with Osorio in doubles. They struggled through three sets to defeat 【15】Mihalikova/Nicholls in the first round, then beat Blinkova/Frees in the second. In post-match interviews, they mentioned they were mostly using singles tactics to score points, and achieving consecutive Grand Slam doubles wins is already very challenging.

In the recently concluded third round, Yuan Yue and Osorio were eliminated by the top seeds Townsend/Siniakova with a 6-2, 6-2 scoreline.

Xu Yifan and her longtime partner Yang Zhaoxuan defeated the impressive multinational pair Guo Hanyu/Panova in the previous round. Facing 【11】Babos/Stefani in the third round, they fought back from losing the first set to level the match but eventually lost in the deciding set with a final score of 2-6, 6-4, 4-6, missing out on the next round.

Wang Yafan, who brought surprises to Chinese fans at this US Open, also failed to progress further. She and Japanese star Shuko Aoyama lost 5-7, 2-6 to the strong seeded duo Andrejeva/Schneider, who as the 5th seeds are strong contenders for this year’s WTA Finals in doubles.

The pair Zhang Shuai and Aleksandrova were the only seeded Chinese team among the four pairs. However, against wildcard entrants Venus Williams/Fernandez, they failed to show their best form and were defeated in straight sets, marking the end of mainland Chinese players’ presence in this year’s US Open draw.
