2025 US Open Day 10: Djokovic Extends Winning Streak to 11 Against Fritz, Set to Face Alcaraz Again

On September 2nd local time, the semifinal places for the women's top half and men's bottom half at the 2025 US Open were confirmed. World No.1 Sabalenka and local star Pegula will clash in the semis, repeating last year's women's final; Djokovic and Alcaraz won their matches, leading to the ninth “Djoko-Alcaraz duel.”

At Arthur·As the first quarterfinal match at Ashe Stadium began, 4th seed and last year's runner-up Pegula defeated Krejcikova 6-3, 6-3, advancing to the US Open semifinals for the second consecutive year. Pegula's performance in the first three Grand Slams this year was modest: third round at the Australian Open, fourth round at the French Open, and a first-round exit at Wimbledon. Moreover, she had only 2 wins and 4 losses in the four tournaments leading up to the US Open. However, Pegula has declared her return to form in Flushing Meadows with steady wins. Last year, she broke through the Grand Slam quarterfinal barrier to reach her first major final, and a year later, she is reaching her second Grand Slam semifinal on this favored ground.

After a grueling three-hour battle against local player Townsend in the previous round, Krejcikova appeared fatigued in her match against Pegula, committing seven double faults throughout. Nevertheless, Krejcikova has demonstrated her best form since returning in May, and this two-time Grand Slam champion remains a promising contender for the future.

Pegula will face her familiar rival Sabalenka in the semifinals, marking their tenth meeting. The American has only won twice previously, while Sabalenka claimed back-to-back victories in last year's US Open final and this year's Miami final. Sabalenka advanced to the semifinals without playing as her opponent Vondrousova withdrew before the match due to a knee injury sustained in her previous match against Leylah Fernandez. Vondrousova had planned to compete but experienced knee pain during warm-up and decided to withdraw after consulting with the tournament doctor, ending her US Open campaign prematurely. Vondrousova showed top-level competitiveness by defeating two top-10 players, Paolini and Leylah Fernandez, earlier in the tournament. We wish her a speedy recovery and early return to the court.

Djokovic

In the night session at Arthur·Ashe Stadium, four-time champion Djokovic withstood a late surge from home favorite and 4th seed Fritz to win in four sets 6-3, 7-5, 3-6, 6-4, maintaining his perfect 11-0 record against Fritz. This marks Djokovic's 14th appearance in the US Open semifinals, his 53rd Grand Slam semifinal overall, and his seventh time reaching the semifinals in all four majors within a single season. After comfortably taking the first two sets, Djokovic faced a strong comeback from Fritz, who took the third set. However, Djokovic applied relentless pressure with flawless play in crucial moments of the fourth set. Fritz committed a double fault on match point, ending his hopes of reaching the US Open final for the second consecutive year.

Alcaraz

Djokovic will meet Alcaraz in the semifinals, a highly anticipated “Djoko-Alcaraz” clash making its US Open debut. In their previous eight encounters, Djokovic holds five wins, including victories in this year's Australian Open quarterfinal and last year's Paris Olympic final. The 2nd seed Alcaraz displayed dominant form in the quarterfinals, winning 6-4, 6-2, 6-4 over 20th seed Lehecka without facing a single break point. This marks Alcaraz's ninth career Grand Slam semifinal and his first hard-court major semifinal since the 2023 US Open.

Lehecka caused an upset by beating Alcaraz at the Doha tournament this February but was unable to repeat the feat against the well-prepared and focused Spaniard this time. The Czech player achieved his best US Open result by reaching the quarterfinals for the second time in his career, elevating his ranking to No.15, and is set to break into the top 20 for the first time next week.
