Three male players have reached the finals of all four Grand Slam tournaments in a single season—will Sinner become the fourth?

Since ascending to the top of the tennis rankings in early 2024, Jannik Sinner has set numerous records, and at this year's US Open, he is poised to write a historic chapter.

Sinner has made it to the singles finals of four consecutive Grand Slam tournaments (2024 US Open through 2025 Wimbledon), currently standing as one of just 11 men in the Open Era to reach every Grand Slam singles final—among them, only Jim Courier was younger when he accomplished this.

This season’s Grand Slam events have showcased Sinner’s outstanding performance: he defeated Zverev to claim the Australian Open title, overcame Alcaraz to win Wimbledon, and reached the French Open final, where he lost to Alcaraz. Now, he is just one victory away from making the US Open final.

If Sinner can beat Aliassime in Friday’s semifinal, he will become the fourth man in the Open Era to reach all four Grand Slam finals in a single season, joining tennis legends Laver, Federer, and Djokovic.

Rod Laver — 1969

Laver is one of the most influential players in modern tennis history and the only male player in the Open Era to achieve the “calendar-year Grand Slam” by winning all four major titles in a single season.

In 1962, during the amateur era, he completed the calendar-year Grand Slam; then in 1969, this Australian player began the season by defeating Andrés Gimeno in the Australian Open final, followed by a victory over compatriot Ken Rosewall in the French Open final, and then beat fellow Australians John Newcombe and Tony Roche in the Wimbledon and US Open finals respectively, accomplishing the calendar-year Grand Slam in the Open Era.

Roger Federer — 2006, 2007, 2009

After Laver, no male player reached all four Grand Slam singles finals in a single season for 37 years, until tennis icon Federer achieved this three times within four years.

Federer first achieved this in 2006: he defeated Marcos Baghdatis in the Australian Open final, Rafael Nadal at Wimbledon, Andy Roddick at the US Open, but lost to Nadal in the French Open final.

In 2007, Federer again lost to Nadal in the French Open final, but won the Australian Open by beating Fernando González, claimed Wimbledon for the second consecutive year over Nadal, and defeated Novak Djokovic in the US Open final.

In 2009, he reached this milestone for the third time: losing to Nadal in the Australian Open final and to Juan Martín del Potro in the US Open final, but defeating Robin Söderling in the French Open final and Roddick at Wimbledon.

Novak Djokovic — 2015, 2021, 2023

The most recent male player to achieve this is Djokovic, who, like Federer, has reached all four Grand Slam finals in a single season three times.

Djokovic first accomplished this in 2015: he beat Andy Murray in the Australian Open final, lost to Stan Wawrinka in the French Open final, then defeated Federer in both Wimbledon and US Open finals.

In 2021, Djokovic was one match away from the calendar Grand Slam: he defeated Daniel Medvedev in Melbourne, beat Stefanos Tsitsipas in Paris, overcame Matteo Berrettini at Wimbledon, but lost to Medvedev in the US Open final. Across these four finals, he narrowly defeated three players born after 1995!

In 2023, Djokovic again reached all four Grand Slam finals: he lost to Alcaraz in the Wimbledon final but beat Tsitsipas in the Australian Open final, Casper Ruud in the French Open final, and Medvedev in the US Open final. The three players born after 1995 reenacted the 2021 scenario once more.

I believe the probability of Sinner achieving this feat is no less than 90%.
