Coincidence or fate, all four Czech players were stopped at the Grand Slam quarterfinals.

As is well known, Grand Slam events are the pinnacle of tennis competitions. Consequently, making it to the quarterfinals is a challenging accomplishment. Yet, in recent days, multiple players from the same country reached the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam. Normally, players who reach this round have strong abilities. At first glance, these athletes appeared likely to progress further. However, the reality was unexpected: all of them were eliminated in the quarterfinals. So, which country do these players represent? And who exactly are they? Today, this article will take you through the story.

That country is the Czech Republic. Back in 2005, Berdych won the Paris Masters title. On the women's side, Kvitová has claimed two Grand Slam championships. The outstanding achievements of these predecessors have inspired many Czech players to push forward. Lehečka is one of the promising male tennis players; as early as 2022, he reached his first Grand Slam quarterfinal, attracting much attention from fans.

In the 2025 season, Lehečka won a tour title in January. Recently, he appeared at the US Open as the 20th seed. In the first round, despite losing the first set, Lehečka staged a comeback to defeat Croatian player Čorić, a Masters champion, advancing with difficulty.

After that, he consecutively defeated Argentina’s Etcheverry, Belgium’s Coppejans, and French veteran Mannarino, reaching his first US Open quarterfinal. However, in the quarterfinals, Lehečka was thoroughly defeated by the top post-2000 player from Spain, Alcaraz, failing to advance further.

Compared to Czech men’s tennis, the women’s side clearly shows stronger strength. Vondroušová and Krejčíková have both won Grand Slam titles. Recently, Vondroušová won the WTA 500 Berlin Open, beating Chinese player Wang Xinyu in the final. Just days ago at the US Open, Vondroušová defeated Russia’s Shcherbakova, America’s Kessler, Italy’s Paolini, and Kazakhstan’s Rybakina, reaching the US Open quarterfinals for the second time in her career.

In the quarterfinals, Vondroušová faced the defending champion, Belarusian player Sabalenka. What was expected to be an exciting match turned unexpectedly as Vondroušová withdrew before the match due to health reasons, becoming the first player to retire at the quarterfinal stage.

Compared to Vondroušová, Krejčíková is undoubtedly more well-known. She won a Grand Slam singles title back in 2021. Moreover, Krejčíková and Siniaková have won women’s doubles titles at all four Grand Slam events, completing a career Grand Slam in doubles. However, her 2025 season results have been less impressive. Before the US Open, Krejčíková had only reached one tour quarterfinal.

At the New York Flushing Meadows tournament, she defeated Canadian player Mboko, who recently won her first WTA 1000 title, in straight sets in the first round, advancing smoothly. Following that, Krejčíková beat Japan’s Naikima, American players Navarro and Townsend, reaching the US Open quarterfinals for the second time. Unfortunately, in the quarterfinals, she was swept aside by American Pegula and had to exit the tournament.

Mucha, who once reached a Grand Slam final, is also a strong Czech player. In the 2025 season, she reached three tour finals. Recently, Mucha entered the US Open as the 11th seed. In the first round, she fought hard to defeat American veteran Serena Williams in three sets. Subsequently, Mucha defeated Romanian player Costea, compatriot Nosková, and Ukrainian Kostyuk to reach the quarterfinals.

In the quarterfinals, her opponent was Japanese player Naomi Osaka, who has won four Grand Slam titles. Despite Mucha’s best efforts, she lost to Osaka. Thus, no Czech player advanced past the quarterfinals. Objectively, this outcome is somewhat disappointing. That’s the tennis story for today; more to come tomorrow.(Source: Tennis Home, Author: Yixin Jushi)
