At only 22 years old, he has already secured 6 Grand Slam titles. Can Carlos Alcaraz match the legendary Roger Federer's achievements?
The 2025 US Open title raised Alcaraz’s total Grand Slam count to six (2 Roland Garros, 2 Wimbledon, and 2 US Open), with only the Australian Open left to complete his set. The 22-year-old also officially reclaimed the world No. 1 ranking from Sinner, starting the 2026 season as the ATP’s top-ranked player.
Meanwhile, tennis legend Mats Wilander believes Alcaraz has a real chance to catch up with Roger Federer’s record of 20 Grand Slam titles.
Alcaraz earned his second US Open and sixth Grand Slam title with a strong performance against Sinner at Flushing Meadows. He had previously lost the Wimbledon final but this time took convincing revenge. During his winning run, Alcaraz dropped only one set and reclaimed the world No. 1 ranking.
Will Alcaraz match Federer’s total Grand Slam title count?
The Spanish player has now won the US Open, Roland Garros, and Wimbledon twice each, with the Australian Open being the only missing Grand Slam. In the Open Era, only 10 male players have more Grand Slam titles than Alcaraz, led by Djokovic (24), Nadal (22), and Federer (20).
"He will win many more titles," said Wilander, a two-time Grand Slam champion. "The question is whether he can reach the numbers of Federer, Djokovic, or Nadal, winning at least 20 Grand Slam titles. I believe the chances are very high."
In the final, although Sinner leveled the score after losing the first set 2-6, Alcaraz responded strongly by dropping just one game in the third set and then breaking serve in the fourth to clinch the match.
"He was fully focused, making very few unforced errors," Wilander explained. "If his serve stays as consistent as today, I see no weaknesses. He played sharply throughout the tournament. And the scary part is how young he still is. Six Grand Slams, back to world No. 1 – that’s truly impressive. When playing at his best, Carlos is the best player in the world."
Wilander also praised Alcaraz’s personality: "He is very well-rounded, solid, humble, and cheerful. He is not only a great player but also an excellent ambassador for tennis."
Notably, Alcaraz and Sinner have met in three consecutive Grand Slam finals. Wilander predicts this dual dominance will continue: "They know they control the tennis world and will share Grand Slam titles for many years to come."
While the next Grand Slam will not take place until early 2026, both Alcaraz and Sinner will compete in the ATP Finals in November to conclude the season.
