Nadal reacts unexpectedly to Federer’s advice for Alcaraz

Nadal expressed disagreement with the career advice that his close friend Roger Federer recently gave to the young star Carlos Alcaraz, highlighting a difference in perspective between the two legends.

Alcaraz, just 22 years old, has won six Grand Slam titles and is expected to have a brilliant career, possibly surpassing both Nadal and Federer.

Nadal, 39, plans to retire at the end of 2024 after winning 22 Grand Slams, while Federer has 20. At the recent US Open, Alcaraz revealed that Federer advised him to “focus on the next five years, until you turn 27, and then think about the next five years after that, instead of planning for 15 or 20 years.”

However, Nadal does not agree with this approach. Speaking at a charity golf event in Mallorca, the former world number one stressed: “Five years is too long, especially in tennis where things can change quickly. What’s important is for Alcaraz to enjoy the present, keep setting goals, consistently improve, and train every day with passion. Even if you are the world number one, there is always room to advance. That is the daily motivation. I have never operated with a five-year plan.”

Although he disagrees with Federer, Nadal still believes Alcaraz is on a “special and unique” career path, continuing the tradition of Spanish tennis success.

He affirmed: “Carlos’s career is on the right track to become something very special. He is an exceptional player, which we have recognized for many years, and he continues to demonstrate that with impressive results.”

“Having a player like Carlos helps Spain maintain its top status in world tennis. Hopefully, he will have a long career, avoid injuries, and win as many Grand Slams as possible. Six titles at this age is already an incredible achievement, and we should let him continue to write his own story.”
