When mentioning Polish female tennis player Swiatek, many are familiar with her. She has already secured six Grand Slam titles, ranking as the most successful 2000s-born player in Grand Slam wins. Looking at it this way, Swiatek's achievements are quite remarkable, and she delivered two sets of 6-0 in the Wimbledon final this year to win her first Wimbledon title.
However, something astonishing occurred. After Wimbledon, starting from the WTA1000 Montreal Open and continuing through to the WTA1000 China Open over just two months, Swiatek was defeated by opponents she had never lost to before. So, what exactly happened? Let this article take you through the story.
After her breakthrough victory at Wimbledon, Swiatek, seeded second in the tournament, swiftly moved on to the WTA1000 Montreal Open. Receiving a first-round bye, she easily defeated Chinese player Guo Hanyu, who had just earned her first tour-level win, in the second round; in the third round, Swiatek only conceded four games to Germany’s Lis.
In the fourth round, her opponent was Denmark’s Tauson. Although Tauson reached the final of a WTA1000 event earlier in the 2025 season, having lost twice before to Swiatek, both fans and bookmakers favored Swiatek to advance. However, Tauson won in straight sets, securing her first career victory over Swiatek. Many did not expect this to be just the beginning of Swiatek’s revenge saga.
Despite an early exit at the WTA1000 Montreal Open, Swiatek went on to win the WTA1000 Cincinnati Open, marking her second title of the 2025 season. This victory helped her regain confidence.
At the end of August, Swiatek appeared at the US Open as the second seed. She consecutively defeated Colombia’s Arango, Netherlands’ Ramens, Russia’s Kalinskaya, and Russia’s Alexandrova to reach the quarterfinals.
In the quarterfinals, she faced American Anisimova, whom she had just beaten decisively in the Wimbledon final. However, this time Anisimova effectively contained Swiatek, limiting her to only seven games throughout the match. Objectively speaking, it was a comprehensive defeat.
At the end of September, fresh off winning the WTA500 Seoul title and entering the China Open as the top seed, Swiatek naturally received a first-round bye. She then beat China’s Yuan Yue and Croatia’s Osorio to reach the round of 16.
In the round of 16, Swiatek faced American Navarro. Although Navarro took the first set and was pushed into a deciding set by Swiatek, she then delivered a double bagel to Swiatek in the final set. Notably, this was also the first time in Swiatek’s career she lost to this opponent.
Last week, as the second seed at the Wuhan Open, Swiatek defeated Czech player Buzkova and Swiss player Bencic to advance to the quarterfinals. Her opponent there was Italy’s Paolini.
Previously, Paolini had never taken a set off Swiatek. However, in this match, Paolini played exceptionally well, and Swiatek managed to win only three games throughout the entire match. That’s the tennis story for today; more to come tomorrow.(Source: Tennis Home, Author: Yixin Jushi)
