A new chapter in Valentin Vacherot’s career has begun following his modern fairy tale at the Shanghai Masters 2025.
The tennis world’s breakout star this year, Valentin Vacherot, experienced a massive leap in the ATP rankings after his astonishing victory at the ATP 1000 Shanghai Masters 2025 last week.
As a result, Vacherot climbed 164 spots in the global tennis rankings, reaching number 40 – the highest ranking of his career. His accumulated points surged nearly fivefold: from 263 to 1,283 points.
Previously an unknown, rarely seen in ATP Tour events this season, Vacherot truly transformed his career with an unbelievable run in Shanghai. Although he did not qualify for the main draw due to his low ranking, Luca Nardi’s unexpected withdrawal opened the door for the player who defeated Ly Hoang Nam in the ATP Challenger Nonthaburi final three years ago.
Vacherot impressively overcame two qualifying hurdles: the young prospect Nishesh Basavareddy and Liam Draxl to enter the main draw. There, the 1998-born athlete achieved a series of remarkable feats, consecutively defeating top rivals: Alexander Bublik, Tomas Machac, Tallon Griekspoor, Holger Rune, and notably Novak Djokovic, to reach the final against his cousin Arthur Rinderknech.
Although Rinderknech took the first set 1-0, Vacherot never lost confidence, stayed true to his playing style, and completed a comeback as his opponent suffered physical issues in the third set. He became the lowest-ranked player ever to win an ATP 1000 event, surpassing Borna Coric’s record at Cincinnati 2022.
Valentin Vacherot’s Shanghai Masters 2025 victory has become a major inspiration for lower-ranked players striving tirelessly to make significant career breakthroughs. From his win over Hoang Nam securing his first Challenger Tour title to claiming the prestigious trophy in Shanghai, Vacherot has earned widespread admiration for his relentless effort.
