Currently the WTA’s top-ranked female player, Aryna Sabalenka revealed a surprising fact related to Novak Djokovic.
Aryna Sabalenka revealed that she proactively contacted Novak Djokovic after losing two consecutive Grand Slam finals earlier this year, hoping to hear from the great player who holds the record of 24 Grand Slam titles about how he copes with the biggest matches in his career.
After winning back-to-back titles at the Australian Open in 2023 and 2024, Sabalenka entered the 2025 season with the ambition to secure a hat-trick of championships at Melbourne Park.
She continued to show impressive form by reaching her third consecutive final. However, the dream of winning three times was shattered as the world number one lost to Madison Keys in a tense three-set match.
Sabalenka said she asked Djokovic for advice following her consecutive defeats in the 2025 Australian Open and 2025 Roland Garros finals.
Refusing to be defeated by those losses, Sabalenka made a strong comeback at Roland Garros a few months later, reaching her first French Open final. The Belarusian player started enthusiastically, gaining an early lead over Coco Gauff, but again couldn’t maintain her pace and the American rallied to win 6-7 (5), 6-2, 6-4.
The consecutive losses left Sabalenka emotionally shattered. After the Australian Open final, she angrily smashed her racket and broke into tears. Following the defeat at Roland Garros, Sabalenka also couldn’t hide her pain and tears flowed again.
It was during this difficult time that she decided to seek advice from Djokovic — a turning point that later helped Sabalenka successfully conquer the final Grand Slam of the year.
“At Wimbledon, I talked with Novak. I just wanted to know how he prepares for big matches — what he focuses on, and what his mindset is before going on court,” Sabalenka recalled at an event in Hong Kong.
“We talked for about an hour, but with Novak, you could talk much longer. He is always ready to share and give advice. Later, when I entered the US Open final, I remembered what Novak said. And I believe that helped me win the championship.”
The victory at the US Open was not only a reward for Sabalenka’s persistent efforts but also helped her avoid ending the 2025 season empty-handed in major tournaments.
The world number one player will now enter 2026 with four Grand Slam titles in her career — a milestone demonstrating the resilience and mental strength she gained from the legend Novak Djokovic.
