Medvedev claims his first ATP title in over two years

Prior to his impressive journey in Almaty (Kazakhstan), the most recent time Daniil Medvedev lifted a trophy was at the Rome Masters in mid-2023.

After a drought of more than two years without a title, Daniil Medvedev finally quenched his thirst for victory by defeating Corentin Moutet in the final of the 2025 Almaty Open with a score of 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 last night on October 19th, Vietnam time. The match, lasting over two and a half hours, showcased the resilience of the former world number one against the French player who was seeking his first ATP title.

This was Medvedev's 40th career final, while Moutet had only reached two finals before, both ending in defeat. With this win, Medvedev secured his 21st ATP title — notably, he has won tournaments in 21 different cities, a record that is hard to surpass.

The first set was intense, with Moutet starting stronger by breaking early, but Medvedev quickly leveled the score and broke serve at a crucial moment to take the set 7-5. In the second set, the Frenchman served more consistently and capitalized on his chances to win 6-4, leveling the match at one set apiece.

In the deciding set, Medvedev demonstrated his superior class. He maintained a high first-serve win rate of 71% and patiently waited for his opponent’s mistakes. When Moutet showed signs of faltering in the eighth game, Medvedev seized the break-point opportunity and closed out the match with a 6-3 victory.

This triumph ended Medvedev's streak of six consecutive final losses and boosted his confidence for the season's final stretch. The Russian player is currently ranked 13th in the world and has a strong chance to return to the top 10 if he maintains his form at the upcoming Vienna Open and Paris Masters.

As for Moutet, despite the loss, he had an impressive week by defeating several strong opponents like Jan-Lennard Struff and Alex Michelsen. The 26-year-old Frenchman will enter the top 40 in the world rankings for the first time — a significant milestone in his breakthrough season.
