On October 20, 2025, Beijing time, the WTA 500 Tokyo event hosted a women’s singles opening round match with Chinese player Wang Xinyu competing against qualifier Grachova. Despite winning the opening set 6-4, Wang was defeated in the following two sets, falling 1-2 in total and failing to move forward.
With this result, Wang Xinyu has now suffered six consecutive singles defeats. It’s worth noting that her Asian season this year has been particularly challenging, as she struggled to secure any singles wins. After exiting the US Open in the second round (losing to Alexandrova), Wang was defeated by Paolini at the Billie Jean King Cup, lost to compatriot Zhang Shuai at the China Open, was upset by Moezima Naejima at the Wuhan Open, fell to fellow Chinese Yuan Yue in Ningbo, and now was reversed by Grachova in Tokyo, indicating a significant dip in form.
Reviewing Wang Xinyu’s recent losses, she faced both formidable opponents and unexpected upsets. In an interview, Wang openly admitted to feeling the pressure of so-called “home expectations,” which contributed to her emotional breakdown and tears after an early exit at the Wuhan Open this year.
In addition, accumulated injuries have posed a major obstacle for the Chinese star. During the Wuhan Open, Wang requested a medical timeout due to lower back discomfort, and later in Ningbo she struggled with an elbow injury that severely affected her serve and stroke feel.
After bowing out in the first round in Tokyo, Wang Xinyu has effectively wrapped up her 2025 season. Looking back at her year, she still had some standout performances, such as at the Berlin grass-court tournament where she defeated several top players including Gauff to reach the final.
However, Wang’s results in the four Grand Slam events this season were underwhelming, with only one singles win each at Wimbledon and the US Open, and first-round exits at both the Australian Open and the French Open.
Born in 2001, Wang Xinyu is still relatively young in today’s women’s tennis scene. Alongside Zheng Qinwen, she forms one of the pillars of Chinese women’s tennis, with both players consistently ranking as the top two Chinese singles players this season. In the latest world rankings, Zheng is placed 11th, Wang is 59th, while the third-ranked Chinese player Yuan Yue sits at 105th.
Despite ending her 2025 professional tour campaign on a six-match losing streak, Wang Xinyu’s prize money earnings have surpassed one million US dollars. According to her personal schedule, her next event is expected to be the National Games, followed by approximately two months of winter training.
We look forward to Wang Xinyu making a strong recovery during the off-season, overcoming her injuries and poor run, and returning to form soon!(Source: Tennis Home, Author: Barbie)
